Greeting you all,

I wonder, since many of you have those nice $ 300+ custom knives, are you really using them?

I have a couple of Spydies I'm very careful with( Ti ATR, CF Delica) because they cost me a lot of money(knives are rather expensive over here:grumpy: ) or are discontinued.

Do you have knives too for pure collection or are you using them all?

Just curious.

Use them or sell them. Maybe keep an art knife off to the side, but a custom is supposed to be better than a production, or what's the use of spending the money?

The ATR was made to take hard use and the Delica to slice well. They are both ideal users and it's a waste of money to pamper them.

I have several sebbies and I only carry one of them. But I have it as my primary edc right now. I have busse and swamp rat and I use them.......if you got infi you know what I mean they scream trash me till it hurts cuz they like it. When it comes to some of my damascus or limited run or "artsy" knives I dont use them because I bought them specifically to collect. That being said all the others I use and use and use, I buy good stuff so I dont worry about them shittin on me and if they do well thats why CRK and strider and Busse and Swamp rat and most other makers have warranties that will replace and or fix them. Thats what attracts me to buying and using high end knives, if I fudge it up they'll fix it up. My friend USAFSP sent his strider SnG back to them with just a lil blade play from constant use(*like cutting a car open to save someone) and they sent him back a NEW ONE! Now thats customer service, but would Kershaw or Spyderco do it....no. Now Spyderco and Benchmade are fantastic knives and I own some of them. But the warranties and customer service that I have delt with and heard about from those companies like strider and CRK and Busse and some makers is what keeps me going back. Now my rant is over.

I dont have the money to buy art knives, and I will use my knives whenever possible. Look at it this way: you only live for a very short time, so enjoy what you have while you have it. you cant take it with you, so beat on it now. No regrets.

I've used my $300.00 Randall model 25 Trapper quite a bit on whitetails. Awesome hunting knife and I love the look of a well used knife, that gives it character.

I use all my knives, I don't collect them, but search for the perfect knife for the job. My current EDC is a Strider SMF, it would be a shame, not to use it, as it is made for hard work.

And yes, knives are expensive around here, too. A BM 710 for 320 USD...that's why I order my knives online.

For me; I won't buy a knife unless I plan on putting it to use. Right now the most expensive knife I have is my Dozier K2. I use it..... but don't abuse it. I have a Randall #19 coming in about.....ohhh......2 years and I will give it a go as well. I have no real interest in ART knives, however, the folks making them amaze me with their talent. :D

I use my customs. I tried the whole collecting for the sake of collecting thing and it didn't do much for me. I'm selling off all my knives I don't carry. I don't have much money to throw around (college student) but I appreciate a nice custom knife very much. My EDC is a Scott Cook Lochsa that I paid $600 for (didn't want to wait to get one from Scott at his table price) I carry it everyday, everywhere. $600 is a whole lot of money to me, but I sure enjoy having this knife in my pocket everyday. It gets scratched up a little, but I don't mind, it can take much worse then I dish out to it.

I use 'em or trade them for something that I will.

Had many $100 Spydies and used them semi-hard (hard for a Spydie, but no prying). Semi hard use has created blade play in every Spydie I've had except for the Para. Cutting up rags for working on cars has done that to 2 of them.

Got a $250 custom, and it was too perfect and gorgeous to use. Had to sell it. Too bad, but I just couldn't use it.

Discovered Busse and Strider. Bought a $375 SMF. I think it's saving me money. After getting it, I sold virtually all my other folders (all Spydies). Bye bye Manix, Para, Lil Temp, etc. Even sold my dinged up beater, the Native. Now my SMF does everything, especially the beater jobs. I used it to pry a locked door open, never would have attempted that with my Manix.

I now have my choice of a few knives where if I break them they get replaced. I don't ever think I'll break one, but thanks to the "abuse me" attitude of Striders and Busses, I use my knives harder than ever. These are knives that laugh at you for thinking you could hurt it, and happen to look better with character marks. Opened a can of tuna with a Strider MFS, used the butt of a Busse BAE as a hammer.

And I've never been happier.

PS: And if these knives didn't cut, I wouldn't have sold my more delicate knives. I can do anything with my SMF I could do with a Caly Jr, except for pull it out in front of sheeple. I use it in the kitchen all the time.

i carry/use all my stuff, with customs for me thats an easy decision since if ya use them & scuff/scratch them up gen'ly the maker will re-do them to 100% for a small fee, so why not?

i say use the spydies the ATR is a great one, imho the best they make, but its not at all any kind of collectors item, if its in LNIB shape in 10 yrs ya would be lucky to get what they go for now imho, $200, if ya wanna make money just about anything is better than knives imho. its hard to break even much less get ahead lol.

I could somewhat sympathize spydutch about these "expensive" knives which are not even "custom".

I bought my ordinary "production" FRN-handled, plain-edged Endura with the equivalent price of 4,000 pesos here about 2 years ago. A lot of non-knife knuts here marvel at it after I explain its superiority over the junky knives they buy but suffer a heart attack or an aneurysm after I tell them how much it cost me. To them, it just not worth that much for "just a knife". Prior to that, I had with me a Buck Voyager, a S&W SWAT, a Vic Explorer and a 2nd hand SOG Multiplier---all of these have cost me some amount of money over the years.

But when you consider the ergos, the edge retention (cutting various materials), the reliable lock and the overall service the Endura has provided me, the priceless satisfaction it has provided can not compare to any other POS that came around.

Besides, I don't spend 12 - 30,000 pesos on latest mobiles/cell phones with 3G/MP3/hi-pixel camera/radio, etc. as much as they do.

I have a couple knives that rotate through EDC. Behind those I have a small 'collection' of backups. The backups don't get used at all. They are there for the day that an EDC goes down. I do this because 'things' tend to become unavailable sometimes. The rest of my collection of knives that were never intended for use is gone.

Ik heb een WH Titan van 350 euro. And I use it as edc. For hard use i get another knife though!

I am using anything that I bought, no matter how much they cost me.
If I don't use what I bought, where is the fun.......
Collection or not, if you wish not to be buried with.
Use them. Life is once!

Generally it is my most expensive knives that get the most use. The least expensive of my EDC blades, by far, is a mid-tech Rob Simonich Bitteroot in Talonite. The others are a Camillus Aftermath and a custom Darrel Ralph Madd Maxx 4" recurve in Talonite. I often add a belt knife to the set, which means my self-made Mobius, my custom Günter Böhlke Ironfinger, my custom Bob Dozier Texas Six, or my Camillus Southwest Bowie. Even the two production knives in that lineup (Aftermath and Southwest Bowie) cost me well over $300 each.

The thing is, while it would hurt me to lose any of them, they actually do work better than just about anything else I could carry. Each of them performs exceptionally well within its intended range of function and each is as reliable as any piece of hardware can be. If I ever find myself in a real emergency situation I don't want my good equipment to be sitting at home on a shelf, I want it with me. And for daily use, I get a great deal of pleasure from using such a beautifully designed and built set of tools.

Many of my friends simply won't buy knives they like because they are afraid to use them. They instead buy ones that will do the job, that don't cost much and that they don't care much about so long as they can make it work. It sounds like a good plan if you are prone to pampering the ones you like. What good is a knife if you won't use it?

I know people that buy cars that way also. I can relate to that in some ways. Everytime I've had a car or truck I really really loved someone would hit it or ding it but the ones I could give a rats a$$ about lasted forever and a day, never got hit, or banged up from hail and I'm able to enjoy them and use them even though I never much cared for them.
