Hey guys, I was just wondering how you decide if your going to use a knife or if you just keep it in a case and baby it. I have several knives that just sit in my case and never get used just becuase im afraid they will get messed up. One in particular is my case amber bone mini copperlock.I bought it to be and edc knife and use when im at work or doing work around the house but it looks so nice I almost hate to use it and it just sits in my case.

I use every knife that I buy. But I have knives that were given to me from my grand father that sit in the safe. Scratches add character and there is a difference between use and abuse.

It depends. I never buy a knife unless I plan to use it...but some sit a while before I get to using them.

Someday perhaps I'll start collecting, but for now I enjoy beating the heck out of them as they were intended.

Sometimes I dont want to use a new knife. I let it sit and get fondled for a while, but eventually it gets used. I find that if I carry it and use it a little bit at first, and gradually use it more and more, eventually Im comfortable with using it for anything (within reason). So just put it in your pocket and dont worry about what you might or might not have to do that day with it.

The bottom line is that all knives you use will get messed up. But thats okay, they are knives. They were made to handle all the scratches, dirt and dust that they will collect and still function perfectly fine. And personally I get more satisfaction out of using a knife than having it sit in my collection.

I used to freak out at the idea of using my 50 dollar Native. Then I got a Benchmade, and freaked out because it was 100 dollars. Over time, I'm less freaked out, and actually enjoying the blades I have.

Get a second one so you can use one and keep the other for fondling/back-up...then in the future refrain from buying knives that are too pretty to use.

never get used just because im afraid they will get messed up.

Thats a good idea. That way, when you die and your wife's next husband gets them, they won't be covered in biscuit gravy, blood and drywall dust as a reminder of you, but will be pristine and virginous. He'll get more for them on ebay that way.

Just kidding. Sort of. :) I too have some safe queens, because I might sell them to some poor sucker someday and using them will only diminish the value. But I often buy two of the same knife, and will use one and hoard the other. That way I can have my cake and eat it too.

I've reduced my collection down to knives that I actually use and while I'm sure that I'll buy more knives in the future....I will use them as well. The only instance where I would have a knife that will just sit in the box is if I decide on buying a backup for any of my current EDCs.

Ain't that the truth PN. Id rather have used my knives, than have some stranger porking my wife AND fondling my NIB knives.

To the OP:

I used to baby them when i was younger, but life is too short to be going around using crappy knives, cause you want to save your nice ones. Now i only use premium cutlery for my cutting tasks, no matter how dirty or hard the task may be. Its more fun that way. Trust me.

I never buy a knife I don't plan to use. I'm not so much a collector as much as I am an accumulator. I have zero interest in safe queens.

Same. I cant stand owning anything that just sits around and never get used. I like to purge my music collection every so often too. Keep the gems get rid of everything else. Knives are no different, and the pleasure of using a well crafted tool just brings a smile to my face.

Use. Messing up a knife and fixing it (if it come to that) makes owning own fun
Just keep to cutting and don't abuse

If I see a knife I really like, I buy 2 of them so I can use one and still have one for the collection, or for back-up in case I lose my original.

Use it responsibly... you don't have to "use and abuse" or beat on it just cuz the 'other kids' do.
:D
