To use or not to use...

So the other day I picked up a Combat Elite M/A tanto in a trade. It's a 2006 vintage with the D2 blade. Now this thing is in new condition, not a scratch, not a mark, nothing. It's also low serial, 00610. I do not have the box but I am wondering if this is some how collectable and I shouldn't use it or what? I know they no longer use D2 for these, just wondering if the D2 bladed models are something that's sought after or should I use it with no worries. I know it's a little silly but I don't want to go out and get scratches on it to find out it's a collector's item. Any input is appreciated.

The top one, obviously

It just depends on your comfort zone dude. If you're thinking twice about using, keep it pristine.

I don't buy a knife now if I am not going to use it. I have picked up a few knives over the years that I decided were too nice to use, but I have sold them. They were made to be used!!

I would go ahead and use it if it were me. I carry and use the most expensive/perhaps collectible knives I have! Of course my "use" is mainly to cut string, tape, and/or paper, and to pull from my pocket to admire it!!:D So my use will rarely take much away from something that is collectible.

Seriously though, as said, if you have doubts, then keep it put up. I will say that not having the box can detract from value with some people.

Personally for me, if a knife is rare/hard to find/serial numbered I would not use it. I have enough knives to use where I don't need to scratch up a knife that is worthy of being a collectors item.

i used to reluctant in using "expensive/rare" knives. life too short just to buy a knife and look at the thing. use it while you can cause tomorrow you could lose both your hands... just saying *knock on wood* :)

Well damn, now I've been hexed! Right before a holiday filled with fire and explosions.

I personally would not use it if I was interested in collecting it. I have lots of user knives.

Well there's the thing. I am not into collector's pieces or safe queens. I figured if it is collectable I may move it on and pick up a new production model that would be just any old knife I wouldn't feel bad about marring. I always hate to see something that I collect that would bring major money or be a jewel in my collection if pristine being used with abandon and if I could put such a thing into the hands of a collector that would appreciate it as such then I would do that (example: Mossberg model 35 with missing aperture sight and drilled for scope mounts :barf:). I doubt this knife would be considered in the same light as a Benchmade First Production but you never know, that's what I was trying to find out. Haven't heard anything so far that would lead me to believe it's a collector's piece.

a knife is not worth a penny if you cant use it or it is not useful. i carry every knife i buy because thats what they are for. when you are 80 you wont say damn i wish it was never used. it would be worth $200 or $300 more than i paid for it. but giving that beat up, sharpened away microtech to your grand son and saying this was one of my favorites and i want you to have it. it would be priceless. use it and it's sentimental value will be worth 100x its market value

Well said, never thought of it that way. I am still not using my collectors though :D

All good points. Maybe I will just use it lightly. I am typically easy on my edc knives anyways.

It's a great knife and will hold up to serious use. I'd use it and enjoy it for what it is.

As was mentioned above, no box, no papers, no collectors. Use it and enjoy it.
