Posting this for my Bro Crex.

Come on down to Trackrock and meet him. (shameless hammer-in plug)

I agree. Come on Gouge, cough it up, we want to know!

Man, what an eye grabber! Gorgeous knife, now let's hear some stats on that bad-boy.

All the best,
Mike U.

Ditto. Crex Kicks and that ain't no lie. What a beautiful knife! If nothing else happens to me today, that made it worth getting up. We should take a lesson from this and spend some time finishing our work. At least I now feel like most of my knives are half done... That's truly fine, thanks for sharing.

Sorry Guys,
Third time I've tried to post a reply tonight. Keeps kicking me out with a not logged in message. So this is the third time I've logged in.
Specs: Blade - forged 5160 steel, 6.75" (11.5"OAL) triple quenched
and triple tempered. File worked spine.
Handle - wild cherry salvaged from lightning kill
Guard & pommel - carved and etched mild steel and copper
Sheath - Cowhide with simulated ostrich (cow) inlay

Thanks Mark for posting these for me. And thank you guys for your kind comments. The knife was a treat to build coupled with sleepless nights. No pre-planned desgin just started falling together one late night at a time.
I promise I will share the "warty" technique once I get it perfected and understand it better. There are still some "?" for me to resolve, (like the toad skeleton at the bottom of my quench tank...Mark...)
As this is not a commissioned piece, I hope to bring it to Trackrock.
I know Sandy will want to pick the sheath apart, and I would expect no less.
You guys considering coming to Trackrock have an opportunity to get some of the inspiration that drives me and the rest of the gang. We share and are blessed by it and in doing so are bonded by it. Everyone brings something to the game. Don't let shyness or confidence hold you back. None of these guys are strangers......at least no stranger than me.
Mark's better at details and stuff so listen up when he posts on Trackrock. See you there. Maybe I'll be prepared to demo the "warting" technique by then.

John,
Not so sure about that but thanks. She would still look good holding it though.

It's not too often that a pic of a blade just reaches out of the computer and smacks me upside my head like that! (yes, I'm shouting...) WHAT A STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL KNIFE!   I love absolutely everything about this knife, and the sheath looks real nice too. I too am interested in this "toad skin" look that you have achieved... I'm going to guess it is similar to the mustard patina process?
Again, simply beautiful work Crex. My hat's off to you!
Mongo

p.s. hey, is this for sale?

p.s.s. Crex, do you have a website?

My guess is he starts the process while forging. It looks almost like a blade that's been forged perilously close to a finished state and had very little grinding done.

Any other guesses? Hey Carl, can the guy who guesses right have the knife? :D

Thanks Guys,
Mongo - no mustard, do like it with my french fried tatters, umhumph, yeah.
Yes, all my knives are for sale except for my miniatures. I probably won't set a price on it until after Christmas. I want to own it for a while.
As far as the sheath goes, I'm going to let Master Helmar critique it and Wild Rose has been kind to offer his opinions both which I welcome heartily. I can see alot of room for improvement in my leather work and these are the guys that can help. I know I rushed it a little and it shows.
No website - not enough time to maintain one if I did.
ps - Like your ride!

Stu - You're in the ballpark. That is one thing I strive for 90%+ on finishing with a hammer. I'm still testing and retesting to make sure I can consistantly reproduce the results and understand what's really going on. The real heart breaker is taking a blade with that kind of finish out and doing destructive test. But I have to make sure it will preform as a knife should. Owwww!
Wife has taken a strong shining to the knife so if I were to give it away it would nost likely have a lot of blood on it. She'd have to skin me first.

Crex,
I saw some knives with a smiler finish that was done in a very dirty coal/coke fire, did this have any thing to do with the finish on this knife. Gib

Beautiful knife Crex. It really is a stunner. I hope you get a chance to pass out the info on that finish. Great, great work there.

Love the knife, but if that is a toad sticker, I don't want to see the frogs in your neck of the woods.

I am interested in some more info on this here Toad Sticker... please email me if she's unspoken for.
Thanks, Mongo
