I've decided that I want to try heat treating some blades made of 01 and need some advice. What kind of toaster oven would suit my needs? Is there any one brand which stands out? Also, when you guys temper your blades, do you lay them on a piece of metal or do you put them directly on the oven rack?

Put some metal or fire brick in the toaster oven for tempering the heat will be more uniform. Check the temperature with a thermometer.

I have two ovens and one of them is the first one i aquired that I purchased from a second hand store for five bucks. Make sure its one that doesnt have a timer. some of them wont cook for too long then the timer goes off and shuts down. Needs to be able to stay on for a couple hours. Like Mete said, purchase a thermometer and test it to check its accuracy. I leave my thermometer in while im treating to keep an eye on things. Good Luck !

This is what I do. I have a Krups oven with digital controls, and the quartz heating elements. I have a 1/2" aluminum plate in there and I find that there is no difference between the temp on the thermometer and the temp I set on the keypad.

Oooooh DIGITAL.... Damm but I like that idea. Mine is turn the dial and keep going back and checking the thermometer till you get it dialed in. Then it keeps cycling up and down about 25 degrees. I'll have to try that "thermal mass" idea. I think that might help even things out a bit. I'll be looking at the krups though. Thanks for the tips guys.
