Yeah, I know its not as exciting as the recommendations for all the cool stuff here, but I do need a new toaster. Basically, I just want a toaster that can fairly quickly burn an english muffin for me.

I went to K-Mart to get some other stuff and saw that the prices run from $15.00 to $80.00 bucks and the price difference must mean something.

I like my toast burned, what can I say. Nothing better than a burned english muffin with butter and peanut butter with an ice cold glass of milk!

hey if ya like it burned i have an old one i'll give ya a deal on lol..........

i got a new braun (IIRC) toaster a while back, works pretty good, wasnt cheap though, $100 IIRC.

Ken's method is a little extreme ,I think a O/A torch would do the job.If you were a knife maker a gas forge or electric HT oven would work well also...There is a neat gadget on the market now . It's a toaster hooked to the internet and you can toast a pattern , design , words etc !

I'm using a Cuisenart Bagel toaster. It works really well with it's ceramic heating element. The wide slot works really wel for something thick and the internal arms close on thinner things. The slot is nice and long so Indian flat breads are easy to toast.

Kitchenaide makes a similar model that I have seen in the big box stores at the shopping mall.

Expect to pay around $80. If you're a coupon hound, you can probably get it a lot cheaper.

I'm curious, do you like the toast to be truly burned or just burned on the outside?

I mean do you like the toast to be over toasted all the way through, or is it the crunchiness and flavor on the outside of the toast that you enjoy?

If it's just the crunchiness and flavor, then get yourself a little torch like they use for creme brulee. Nice kitchen stores sell them, but they are functionally the same as a torch you could buy at the hardware store for much less.

I'm talking about the very small torches like the ones that plumbers use to work on copper pipes in small spaces. Just make sure that you get one that doesn't use some kind of weird toxic gas, I'm not very knowledgeable in that regard. Me being clueless I would recommend butane or propane.

Alternately you can do like the English do. They often like their toast only toasted on one side, so they frequently use a frying pan.

Get yourself a new egg pan (if it's teflon get a nice one so you don't give yourself cancer of the bowels) and only use it for toast. Don't put any oil or butter in it and put it on med-high heat and watch it while it toasts, because at that heat it will only take a couple minutes and if you're not paying attention you'd be amazed how quickly it can burst into flame. I say only use it for toast because the minute you start cooking other things, it will develop scratches and residue no matter how well you clean, and will make your life much more difficult when you just want to toast some bread.

Same thing goes for eggs by the way, only ever cook eggs in your egg pan, no exceptions.
