Toboggan modification...messin' with a good thing.

I'm not usually one to mess with a good thing but I got a 'wild hair' and took my recently sharked 'Shrek Snot' Toboggan out to my shop and reshaped the blade a bit (warranty void!). I really like the handle ergos on the Toboggan and the blade/handle ratio is sweet with a little more handle and little less blade than a Hiking Buddy. But I was having a tough time warming up to the 'humped' blade profile and prominent guard. I like how it turned out and will be moving this knife into my EDC rotation...carrying it today, actually. Sorry Andy, for messing with your design! :D

Its your knife my friend. I can't say I think you did a bad job designing a new pattern. I actually kinda like it.

Nice job. I picked up a factory guardless Toboggan which I carry most of the time. I find the swayback/hump quite pleasing and use it for spreading stuff on bread or crackers in a Nessmuky kind of way.

Thanks, guys... I obviously didn't touch the grind so, functionally, it's no different. I like how the lines turned out though and with the existing deep vertical contours on the handle, I don't think I'll hurt myself without the guard.

Cool. One of the things I said after using the Toboggan was that I want a guardless version in stainless steel.

Awesome. How'd you do it? Files, stones, sander? I like it, especially the guard less part.

2" belt grinder, a scotchbrite wheel and a little 600 grit paper. Scary doing something like this to a Fiddleback!.......

What kind of crazy person dares to modify a perfectly good Fiddleback. ;)

Nice job Scott. I prefer the guard less models myself for close work and ease of sharpening on the back end of the blade. It is amazing how a few small tweaks like this can significantly improve your enjoyment of the knife for your personal uses. My modified Monarch and Sneaky Pete are two of my most used knives now.

Thanks for sharing the before and after photos. I prefer the look of your version. Well done my friend!

Phil

Then again, you coulda bought a Handyman.....:)

I really like the blade profile on both the HB and the Handyman. The handle design is way different on the Toboggan...very comfortable. So my goal was to get the blade profile closer to the HB and HM and keep the nice contours of the Toboggan handle.
