Today I was invited to the Thanksgiving dinner(yeah, our Thanksgiving is in October) at a local church. after food and drinks we had a pumpkin carving competition. Our table were distributed a quite complicated pattern (witch on her broom) and a shitty carving tool. During the carving I got really frustrated by the little piece of stainless steel w/o any edge and took out my newly acquired Super CQC-8. The immediate reaction on the table was astonishment, followed by voices like "That's a huge scary knife","People will get scared by that","Is that legal?"

As a result I didn't get to use my Emerson, but the story made me realize again how "special" I am as the only knife person in a non-knife group.

And here I thought all good church going folk had guns and carried knives.
What I get for thinking I suppose.

Don't these people have larger knives at home? I would think even a common steak knife would be bigger. Maybe they're just ignorant sheeple. I mean, they're celebrating Thanksgiving a month early. :p

I would have still used it! Comments be damned, you already had it out. If they were that scared you most likely would have won the competition not matter how good your pumpkin looked!

I busted out my large micarta sebenza the other day to cut some balloon string at a kid's birthday party and seemed like overkill. Imagine if I pulled out my Emerson HD-12...:P

so you pulled out a blade designed to be used by the military's finest in combat....while you were at church....and you wonder why they reacted the way they did?

I betcha I can think of another place starting with a "C" and ending with an "A" that might have the same reaction...

i betchya a lot of people at most churches would have the same reaction to a combat knife being pulled out.

There was meant to be a smiley in there(now fixed), but I didn't notice it until I read it this morning. Knives are a lot like tattoos in that some people get just a wee bit nervous when they see them.

You gotta remember this is Canada
Knives generally are more accepted here than in most states, judging by the comments on Bladeforums.

My question would be how did he deploy the blade? That often makes more of a difference than the actual blade itself...unless you unluckily run into those people who are just scared in general.

well, i slowly took out the super 8 and opened it up gently...

In that case, it's their problem, not yours.
Some people just have unreasonable fears. Perhaps they'll get over them when they see knives other than ones in the kitchen get used.:)
(or maybe not:()
