Today, I will no longer baby my BM Griptilian. It's not an expensive knife to most, but when you don't have a job and you got it as a gift, you're careful with it. Last night, I had to cut open a bag of peat moss, and found myself worried that dirt would get in the action, and the moisture could get trapped and it could rust! Well from now on, I'm going to actually use it hard! It's not a knife meant for looks, so I guess I have nothing to lose...right?

:D

My wife uses a Mini-Griptilian and she is very hard on it. She quite often uses it in the garden as an all around tool. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it laying on the kitchen counter covered in dirt and plant juices. It is still as smooth as ever only it doesn't look new. I think used knives look better because they have character.

That's the right attitude, my friend! Benchmades are made to be used, not just looked at or babied...(Now, if only I can convince MYSELF of that...:D.:D.).

:D I'd write a longer reply, but I got a little adhesive tape on the blade and I'm going to have go go clean it.

Thanks for the reassurance, and I liked your post Kimberholic. I guess if it can hold up to that type of usage, it will be fine for my uses. I'd still clean it, but maybe I wouldn't bust out the soap and water every time I slice a piece of paper :)

Why buy a Benchmade if not to use it hard. The nice thing about Benchmades is that if you use it a little too hard, you send it back and they fix it up for you.

I swear by Benchmade, for the past 7 years I have had a Benchmade in my pocket and they have never let me down.

Needleremorse,
I've also spent many days thinking of this particular question! :D
See; my grandfather bought a german pocket knife when he was 20 years old..... that's more than 50 years ago!! He has carried it always with him and (ab)used and it's now sooooooo worn out!...

(maybe I should take a pic, I'm sure nobody has a more worn out knife then that!! :D ....if somebody ever makes a contest for most used knife....I win!! ;) )

Anyways, my point being: eventhough it's got so many scratches...it's HIS KNIFE...using the knife so much gave it a tremendous emotional value for him.
I also want to do this!! Thats why I sold my entire collection of not-so-expensive knives to my brother and bought myself 1 really nice knife (the 690 you posted the pics of ;) ...thanks!) to keep and use for as long as it holds up.....
It's already scratched and used alot and sharpened! :D (and it's only a week old ya know :D )
And by the time that one brakes, I'm sure i've already saved enough money to buy me a Sebbie that will serve me the rest of my life :)

Take care, Davy
