To make a long story short, my wife was looking for something else and found something of mine that I thought was lost.

When Ronnie was president I was working for Xerox in Santa Barbara. One of my buddies serviced the copiers at the ranch. He told me that the Secret Service was selling t-shirts, hats and other stuff. He got me this buckle. Shortly after I bought the buckle, SS headquarters found out about the souvenir sales and shut them down. I have been offered $250 for the buckle, but it was lost when we moved to AZ. My wife found it under a bunch of junk in one of our closets. :D

Glad to hear that you have found it again, Thats a Great souvenir and a great story.

what a great souvenir!!!

can i have it?

:)

Maybe my son will give it to when I croak. ;)

And now, the rest of the story.

One of the guys on my team bought two of the buckles. (I think they were $18) He sold one for $150 and wore the other. A dealer in downtown Santa Barbara saw it and wanted some to sell. He called Secret Service HQ in DC and wanted to order 100 buckles. They didn't know what he was talking about. When the bosses found out what was going on, they shut it down.

were these made up specifically to sell? or were they issued to the detail, then they sold the surplus?

There was no surplus. They were made for the detail and a few of the guys got the bright idea to sell them to visitors. They didn't actually make a profit on these. The small amount ordered would probably have cost about what they were selling them for.

I don't know how many were made. It would be interesting to find out what happened to the rest of them.
