Saw an ad on Craigslist this morning saying a guy had several axes for saw for $10.00 each,, including some old ones. The only pic was of a double bit and a Fiskars camp axe. So I went by this afternoon to see what he had. He aid "if you buy 4, I'll give you the one with the busted handle" and that one was a Collins Commander, so I picked out these:

left to right: no-name DB, Fiskars, Plumb, newer Craftsman, and Collins Commander.
I think the guy just bought a new axe every time he mucked up the handle on one because all of the hafts are trashed except for the Craftsman. not bad for $40, the Fiskars alone would be over $30, new.

Closeup of the Commander label:

The Plumb was sharpened at a very steep angle and will need teh most work but the rest are in good shape; it doesnt look like any of them have been sharpened, ever. Hopefully, I will find a name on the DB when I clean it up.

thanks for looking

thanks, guys. I broke out the steel wool and WD-40 this morning and was able to find a name on the DB; it is a Craftsman. Any idea who made the Craftsman?

Pegs, I'm guessing the Plumb is the oldest, and the others are relatively new, correct?

The Craftsman DB might be an old axe. As for who made it for Craftsman it would be tough to determine. I've read that there was an actual Craftsman factory that made them at one time. I've also heard that some were made by Vaughan. I have an old Craftsman hatchet that looks identical to a same-period Vaughan. But Sears/Craftsman is known to switch manufacturers from year to year. I'd bet they had axes made by numerous name-brand axe makers.

And yes, the other 3 are relatively new.

I emailed Craftsman's vintage section of their website awhile back asking about their stamp dates for different logos. I never heard back. Would you mind posting up a pick of the Craftsman and its cleaned up stamp?

Here is a pic of the Craftsman stamp:

And a pic of the Craftsman and the Plumb after re-hanging. The DB was on a straight SB handle, which I was able to save and re-use on the Plumb. Lowe's had a decent DB handle that is now on the Craftsman DB.

Hey fellows!
These are a few pics from a Craftsman axe that my F-in-L gave me. I believe it's the same stamp as the one above.
He was born in '39 and told me that he got the axe when he was a teenager.
So that dates it back into the early to mid '50's.

Pegs...
The book Axe Makers of NA states that Sears & Roebuck Co. Built a Fulton axe factory at Chicago. It doesn't give an exact date, but it seems that it was built in the early 1900's. I would think that they also made the Craftsman line there as well, after it was acquired in the 30's.

Bearhunter, that is very close to the same stamp. The small writing on mine says "Made in USA, Reg. TRADEMARK" but it is very close. Nice axe and cover, btw.

I see.
I'm viewing thru tapatalk on an iPhone, so I couldn't tell for sure.

And thanks :)
It has special meaning to me because of who gave it to me :)
He split wood with it years ago and I've split many cords of wood with it myself.
That old sheath IS sweet ;)
