I love antique stores. Nuff said. Got these four for right under $50.00.
First up is a Maine pattern marked D.Y, and 2 1/2 under the poll.

Here's a Collins Hudson Bay (no idea of the date).

Maine Pattern 2 Lb axe (gotta re-haft it). Marked 2 under the poll with no other visible markings.

The last is a cute little hatchet with no markings whatsoever.

All nice finds. You did good.

I like that little 2-pound Maine but it looks like it might be hung on a cruiser handle.

Yeah it'll be rehafted as soon as I get the ambition to cut down another maple for a handle. The Collins is gonna go on a handle as soon as I carve one out.

I'll double post to ask if this should be restored. I can get it soaking in vinegar tonight if so, so I can start up with hafting it tomorrow.

I decided to work on the Hudson Bay. De-Rusting today. Water soak-scrub cycles. Don't want to go too harsh on what I use. Would cola be out of the question?

Hi DT,

I just use Apple Cider Vinegar to de-rust my Axe heads. So far, it's worked pretty good. After removing from Vinegar, I wash with hot water and soap, rinse really good, dry well and then drench with Oil. I don't know if this is truly the best/correct way of doing this but, it seems to work.

I'm thinking vinegar is the next step. In my restoration thread I showed I got a tad over-zealous with the wire cup brush. Vinegar will give me a nice even forced patina after a bit of sanding.

Hi DT,

Yep, I like using Vinegar as I've had good result. In fact.....just yesterday (Sunday June 1) I found/bought TWO "Hudson Bay" Axes from "Yard Sales/Flea Markets". One is actually a small vintage Hudson Bay (style ?) Camp Hatchet and the other is a larger (1 3/4 lb.) Hudson Bay Axe head. I can not read/see any markings due to rust. I'm hoping once the rust is removed I might be able to make out a name like NORLUND or COLLINS! Both Axe heads are in otherwise very nice condition.

Regards,
HARDBALL
