Do to surgery on my right hand; I haven’t carried a knife in over a month and a half. I never thought about how useful a knife really is until I didn’t have one for a long time. I still can’t hold one and forget trying to open one. My GEC #25 just laughs at me. So I thought I’d like to hear from all of you. How jealous can you make me? What did you carry and what did you use it for today?

Bill, if a little straight knife will help when the time comes, shoot me an email and I'll get you fixed up. Good to see you again but sorry to hear that you've been under the weather.

Thanks Blues for the offer. When the time comes I still have my little Lil Blue necker that was inspired by you from Ray kirk. Still love that little 52100 necker. You should have seen me trying to cut a pizza for the kids yesterday. What a goof is all that comes to mind.

Aw mam, I feel for ya! I had hand surgery a few years back, and it was an awkward time. Not much I could deal with as far as folders went. Tried a few modern ones friends had loaned me, but I just didn't like them. It was easier to just carry a small sheath knife in my pocket. That was my very first idea of the unfolding pocket knife that I still like today. Just the Peoples Republik Of Marylandistan does not agree. But a Victorinox lobster like the little classic works well. It's so easy to open due to the very light spring presure of the lobster pattern, even an 84 year old in a nursing home can do it. And in truth, the little Vic classic does most of what I need if I weren't a knife nut that loves peanuts.

Most days I use a small pocket knife for lots of things. In the last few days I've used a pocket knife for the following;

1. Opened a heavy manilla shipping envelope that arrived in the mail containing a couple new Opinel number 8's. Christmas is coming and they are going to a couple different family members that have admired the one Karencarries in her purse. I sand them down, refinish ith a weather proof urethane, modify the locking ring to twist farther around for better lock, and grease the joints before I hand them out. Being an old fart with some hand arthritis issues, I need a nice sharp knife more than ever for opening packages. My peanut did the opening duties of the package.

2. Winter is coming. I topped off both the windshield washer reservoirs in Karen's car and my truck with the Rain-X orange stuff I like better than the standard blue stuff. I had to use the little blade of the Vic classic on my keyring to cut out the foil seal inside the cap.

3. Slit open a new 20 pound bag of Thistle for the finch feeder out back. The Case peanut did the honors on the heavy plastic bag.

4. Pearl The Wonder Corgi got a new rawhide chewy this morning. It came wrapped up in shrink wrapped stubborn plastic that had to be battled with. Again, peanut freed the chew for Pearl to enjoy.

5. Sheer appreciation. I took out my damascus peanut and fondled the amber jigged bone while whispering My precious!. I think Karen is starting to worry about me.

Hope your hand heals up well. Shoot me an email, I may have someting to help you out.

Carl.

Sorry to hear about the hand. I've done some rehab with people with hand surgery and it isn't fun. Anyways today I am toting my 2012 forum trapper. Really love this thing. I used it this morning to prepare my breakfast by cutting frozen strawberries into small chunks for a smoothie.

Sorry to hear that. I lost the use of my left hand for about a year. Its no fun but I wish you a great recovery.

I haven't used my knife for anything today.

Thanks for the idea Carl the Opinel #6 may just be the folder that could work as it opens easy and has a pretty good handle on it. As for a wile longer I'm still a lefty. Things are recovering very well in my opinion. Thanks everyone for the good wishes and I'm doing fine heck I even used a few fingurs to type this so everything is good.

I hope your hand gets better soon db.

For what it's worth, today's knife is the same one I've been carrying for just over a year and the one that has pretty much caused the shelving of all of my carry options. A Case Mini Copperlock.

My son, jokingly, once gave me grief about carrying a knife that required two hands to open. I picked up the Mini Copperlock, pinched the blade between my thumb and index finger, gave it a short flick and it was open.

Due to the weaker spring and relying on the lock to make it safer, it actually opens very easy one-handed. I've even pinched the blade closer to the tip and used the seem of my jeans to stop the handle as I opened the knife.

I haven't used it yet today if that helps.;)

That last part is especially sad to me, because GEC #25s should always elicit smiles, and not engage in laughter at another's expense. :( :grumpy:

While very true-- I love how easily mine opens, and the solid click when the lock engages-- for those with compromised hand function, it can be difficult to close because of the direct pressure needed (on a relatively small, non-dispersible-force point in the handle) to disengage the lock.

It's still a mighty fine pattern, however.

Save for a few funny exceptions, all of which have had to be pointed out to me (shooting pool and dealing cards, as two examples), I am right-handed to a fault. When dealing with my own right-sided injury, one of the hardest things to learn to do left-handed was brush my teeth. I'm still surprised I didn't end up with toothpaste in my left eye.

Best wishes to you for a continued healthy recovery.

I'm just getting rolling today, so haven't used a knife for anything yet, but shall keep you posted regarding any interesting exploits with today's choice, my ebony #25:

Bill, I didn't read all the posts above mine but if it's been mentioned I apologize. I have a very old "One Arm Bandit" which you can apply to almost any knife. It's a removable thumbstud that attaches via a small allen head screw. It allows for ez open for either a righty or lefty. It wont harm the knife blade either---or has never for me in the past. I'd send it to you to use and have for that matter if that would help you in any way. These were popular @ one time to be used on BUCK 110's an such.

I can relate to your situation a little. Hope you regain full use of your hand. I'm like Pertinux in that I can't do anything significant with my left hand. I have a bad muscle/tendon problem in my right arm right now and brushing my teeth can be downright uncomfortable due to the motions involved in completing that task. I've tried a few times to brush left handed with limited success, so most of the time I just tough it out righty.

Thanks to everyone for all the great offers and willingness to send something to help me. I really do appreciate it very much. The truth is I have way more knives than I know what to do with now. However your suggestions do give me ideas I didn’t have before. The generosity shown every day in this forum is amazing. I wish all of you lived in this area so I could throw a big party for all of us. And you guys are pretty close the hardest thing for me to do was in the bathroom but it wasn't brushing my teeth. :)

hope your hands gets better soon, I haven't cut much today but this little fixed blade helped me out with some tape in the barn while I'm working on something
