Toilet Paper trick

"Toilet paper. Take a roll and “Field Strip” it. By field stripping it, you wrap a layer of tape around the outside, and then pull the cardboard tube from the center. Now the paper will feed from the center and work out, like a pack of baby wipes (the kind in the round containers). Put this in one of the small zip locks from the kitchen and smash it flat."

I found this on some site, and thought that was an ingenious trick. It is much more handy to use that way instead of the traditional way.

Somewhere I saw someone use either a 50 or 100 count CD/DVD container, take out the center spindle, and then feed the TP from the center of the roll through the hole.

Kinda bulky, but ingenious.

You know, I was thinking of a better container than the Zip-lock bag, and that is it. A little heavier, but neater and sturdier.

Rather than make toilet paper feed like baby wipes, I carry baby wipes. If you haven't tried baby wipes, you should.

I'm struggling to see why this would work any better than the normal approach to TP

I like to think I'm a little tougher than the average guy, more able to withstand the harsh surprises that nature can throw at a person, just a tiny bit more able to do without the luxuries. All that said, when I head out, I'm bringing the softest, quadruple-ply, quilted TP that money can buy. I guess any wimpiness in me settled around my overly sensitive rump. LOL

Good ideals, for me as long as it's dry I'm happy but I always bring a can of Yard Guard with when I venture out, helps keep the bug bites on your rump down to a minimum.;)

Yeah, none of that, "Pine cones are quite effective" for me. I'm sure an orbital sander would be effective, too, but I'll never know because I'll have TP with me. Plus, my wife has Crohn's Disease, so TP really is a survival item.

I use a Nalgene that is just a little bigger than a roll of toilet paper - crushproof, waterproof, reusable. Spare tp is sealed in a plastic bag.

I carry baby wipes as well and have done for years- make fun if you must, but like Karl Malden, I "don't leave home without them." I'm talking about canoe camping, etc., not going to the local shopping plaza, of course. :o

Task force, considering your hyper sensitive butt, give these a try and report back. :D

I just tried it out, and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed :)

Baby wipes=really, truly clean=goodbye to underwear=no more chafing during long hikes.

Use baby wipes. Go "freestyle". Enjoy nature more.

I use baby wipes (in conjunction with TP). Especially on long winter trips, or climbing trips where there is no hope of washing. I also used them for an entire (hot and humid) summer of working in a tent camp. Definatly the way to go for personal hygene. Hand santizer gel replaces soap and water for hand washing.

Anyone have any comments of brands of baby wipes? I mostly used the Wet Ones brand, and found it left a bit of a sticky residue, and I didn't like the strong perfume. Lately I have switched to the Combat Bath ones from US Cavalry and I seem to like them better. Maybe it is just he camo packaging I like better, who knows. I just bought some Hoo Ahhs from US Cav but have not yet had the chance to try them out.

Anything cheap and non-scented. Don't need a bear to come along and bite your ass! :D

I usually try to make sure they are "baby Wipes" and not just wet ones (huggies for example) They contain no alcohol and are easier on you especially if you have a case of the runs or the sticky wickeds and need to wipe alot.:)

I do carry a few alcohol based wipes as these are great for hand clensing and for seat clensing if you have to use a less than sanitary facility (say battery park NY) :barf:

Also bring Imodium to minimize the need to wipe.

PS: How To Sh*T in the woods is a great book on the subject of toileting outdoors and its possible effects, Great ideas for areas that require you to pack out human waste.

Sticky residue? Maybe you're not wiping ENOUGH. Sorry, couldn't resist the temptation to pull that one out of context.

Imodium is a good thing. Works almost as well as MRE cheese for "putting a cork in the works". You know you've been eating MRE's too long when everything comes out square, sealed in green plastic, and labeled "Feces, Dehydrated, Type 1".

There was a guy I knew when I was with 3/47th INF that used to keep a BM diary...On the day he did STABO training, his entry was "WORST EVER". I prefer not to speculate on what he meant.

Hope that this is not to OT. For regular car camping, do the same to a roll of paper towels. Open just one end of the wrapper and pull the core out, keeps the towels from unrolling and keeps them clean.

I do like the Nalgene idea for the TP!
