Anybody seen this one yet? Is it a production model and who is making it? $8 is cheap as hell, at that price all I think is crap.
Puzzeled.

Micarta Grip

I think the same of $8 knives, However that piece is gorgeous and the flip side of $8 knives is that they only cost $8. I see that it says 440 stainless on the thing. If anyone can geive us slid info I would much appreciate it.

That knife is actually a licensed copy. Master Cutlery of NJ commisioned Tom Anderson to make those. It is no where near the level of a real Tom Anderson but it is certainly worth more than the $8.00 they are asking.

I haven't personally seen the Master Cutlery knife but I'm sure it isn't very high quality. I've got a real Tom Anderson though, and I can tell you that it's worth every penny. :)

Got bored one night while on E-Bay when WOW was clearing their warehouse and put some bids on some package deals (yes I'm an auction junky). Included in one of them were these Tom Anderson cheapies. Pictures were drastically better than what I received! No complaints about WOW as there were some quality knives in the package deal (its where I got my Camillus EDC), but these Master/Tom Anderson collaberations were not. But suprisingly some of the Master knockoffs are almost semi adequately decent, for a cheap made in China POS.

Wait til you see some of the new stuff coming out of China. What we are going through here is the same curve we went through when Taiwan came on line as a major player in the cutlery market. Now China is at the point in it's own right and the fact is that China is now making some items as well as Taiwan but at about 25% the cost. So you will be seeing a lot of this so called China cheapies from here on out. And many are no longer POSs. When you see the price you will be shocked and think that it can't be a decent knife. But remember the same thing happened when Taiwan started producing decent knives for the sub $50 market. Now you can get decent knives for the sub $25 price. No these are not the best knives ever made but they are incredible values and offer more bang for your buck.

I've handled one of those and actually thier not bad, the handle feels good, it locks up well and seemed to have an ok edge. I'm thinking about buying one from smoky mountain knife works they've got them for 6.95, next time I'm ordering I'll throw one in with the other stuff and see how good it is.

Unless you're willing to NOT buy 30-40% of US goods (the percentage of items at least assembled in China if not made there) you're supporting them any way.

just get yourselves a real Tom Anderson blade, you will be very happy! :) pete, almost got that BG-42 folder In knife blade all polished up again! :D but its been on the back burner due to my orders. I am also playing with Ti on fixed blades, too :)

I bought a cheap ($20) knife from BladeAuction.com a while back with Carbon fiber slabs over Aluminum scales. I've never carried it, and it never comes out of it's box. The detent pin doesn't hold the blade in any way shape or form, and the liner lock goes all the way to the far scale when open. The only reason it locks the blade, is that the space between the blade and the scale is less than the width of the liner. I regret spending the $20.:grumpy: I have heard that there might be some higher quality collaborations from Tom Anderson in the future, though. The design and shape of the knife is great, I just wish I could afford the original.

Tom Anderson does make this model of knife in his custom line, so if you really like it, get one made by him, a true custom knife. Masters makes the copies and just from looking at the pic, the micarta layers do not seem very even, and the blade looks like a much lower quality. check out toms website, knifeart.com or bladeart.com, they might have this model in stock.

Mike, when they can match the quality of the early Gigands then China will be in a position to challenge the low to mid-end market, if they can get over the stigma of being "China."

I'm almost positive it's not micarta. I have one, and I pulled the whole thing apart to tighten it up. The overlays look like cheap, thin plastic with a screened on pattern meant to resemble micarta. I'm not sure what the frame is made of, but if the blade is 440-anything, it might be worth the eight bucks I paid. After tightening the screws on the liner lock inlay (one of which twisted apart at the screwhead), mine locks up tight, but all the way to the right. The detente is not a ball, just a semicircular area mashed out of the lock leaf, and since the mating hole in the blade was drilled a bit oversize it doesn't hold the blade all the way in very tightly. The tip of the blade can creep out of the handle before it meets any resistence. All in all, though, it wouldn't be a bad knife to use for, say, cutting buried landscaping plastic or something or for trying the pattern before ordering a handmade from Tom.

Tom is collaborating with 2 different companies. Look for some great stuff. This is the early stages of what promises to be a long relationship with many custom makers.

China is now where Taiwan was a few years ago. In fact if you could have seen the knives on the table that only a select few have seen, like Rob Simonich, Trace Rinaldi and other you would know what I am in the know about.

Stay Tuned folks, it gets real interesting from here!
