I've had a tom Anderson razor for a year now and just cant seem to keep a edge on it I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on keeping it sharp

How sharp is it when you sharpen it? You want to keep the edge flat, try using sandpaper and lapping film backed on glass.

thanks rend for the tip and when I sharpen it I can shave the hairs on my arm with it but it just seems to dull very quickly
I have a sharpening system with ceramic stones that go from 180 to 300 grit what I shasrpen it with and all my other knives keep a good edge when sharpen

I have to chime in on this. Are you shaving with this razor? If so a razor should be taken up to 2000 grit on something like the Spyderco ulta fine ceramic stone. Then on to stropping it on a strop with slurry applied. Something like the green chromium oxide, 200 strokes. Then on to smooth leather and 300 strokes. Then on to paper over a hard counter top, 300 strokes. Plus, is it a 7/8's or 5/8's? A common practice is to use a layer or two of black electric tape on the spine when sharpening to set the angle. Depending on what angle it is. DM

The spyderco ultra-fine is 8000 grit.
Also, that much stropping with compound will really round the edge. I'd recommend the sandpaper and lapping film.

A $10 pocket knife shaped like a razor is not the best platform to shave with so 800 strokes on a strop is not needed here or with a straight razor.

With a steel listing of "440" I doubt it will ever take a edge worth writing home to mom about.

Having took a quick glance at the razor I don't think it be something I use to shave with. It also doesn't sound like you have the proper sharpening setup to get a polished enough edge to shave effectively with a straight razor. To my knowledge you want a highly polished edge at some very acute angles to push cut those whiskers off without irritation.

I imagine the guys over on this side of the forum may be able to set you straight with the right equipment. Or a different forum which specializes in straight razors.

If this is the razor pocket knife, I suspect its just not hard enough for the edge you are giving it. To be clear, if its the pocket knife you are talking about, then all the advice for razors won't help. The angle will be much too fine. I'd say got to a higher angle, or just not worry about it. It may be just not able to hold an edge.

As for sharpening razors, watch a couple videos of Mastro Livi sharpening. He does everything "wrong" and they seem sharp. Everyone has a method.

hi everyone I don't shave with the knife I was just saying when first sharpened it can shave the hairs on my arm but it do's not keep the edge for long

Oh. That's just because it's a crappy knife.
