I thought you guys might like to hear about this custom knife by Tom Halloran. Its called the Grunt and Tom describes it as a combat knife for well... grunts, but I think there is a lot of utility to the design as well.
The most striking thing about it is the broad blade. It almost looks like a butchers cleaver its so broad. I personally like broad blades and its one of the things that appealed to me about this knife. It has a high flat grind, with a nice thin edge for slicing. The sweeping belly is pronounced.
You'll also notice that it has a scoop out of the spine, kind of like the WSK design. That appealed to me straightaway as a very nice platform if one wants to baton with it.
The handle is extremely generous, offering plenty of purchase. You can choke up on the knife easily and also hold it far back if you want more room to swing.
The slabs are made of G-10 and they are nicely textured to afford better grip. The edges are also radiused for comfort. I really like the colour.
The steel is 1084 which is a high carbon steel so the blade is parkerized to prevent rust. I don't know too much about this process but it seems to be pretty hardy. I stuck the knife in my home made chopping block and the coating didn't seem too phased by that.
Its a fairly large blade at around 11 inches OAL. The blade is around 5 inches long, with the cutting edge around 4,5 inches.
The paddle style sheath is well executed out of kydex. It holds the knife securely but it also clears easily and quickly.
About the only thing I would change is to make the skull crusher pommel flat to make it handier as a makeshift hammer.
