I've been hearing a lot about Tom Krein Knives. I bought from SEVERAL Forumites who were selling some of their goodies so they could get a Krein Kustom (hahaha) Knife.
I was ensnared by a post of Krein's TK1 on another forum by Wire Edge
I had a few special needs (I have the use of only my left arm and hand, weak side, for a few more months)
I emailed Tom about the TK1 and chatted with him about my needs to have a Kneck Knife, small, pointy, not flexing to handle my edc needs. Needs like opening envelopes, boxes, plastic bags, blister packs (the most difficult), cutting veggies and fruit...you know the drill.
Tom was great! He said that if I didn't like, AFTER I USED THE TK1 FOR AWHILE, to return it for a refund. I went to Krein's website and scoped out his knives.
I saw the TK4 and TK8. Well I chatted some more with Tom Krein, at length, you know how it is when you talk edge geometry, blade design, handle and sheath materials with a fellow knife knut
Somehow the conversation got to knife passarounds...one of my fav topics. Tom offered to send me a TK8 for passaround. WOOHOO!!!
A TK8 WITH D2 STEEL, BEADBLASTED G10 SCALES......
Here's the passaround signup link
Tom sent this passaround with a TK8 that I ordered with BROWN micarta and brass pins.
I haven't even used my TK8. Just the passaround
Here's the skinny.....
The specs:
OAL - 8 1/2 INCH
BLADE - 3 7/8 INCH
D2 STEEL
THICKNESS - 3/16 HOLLOW GRIND
HANDLE - G10 beadblasted, no hand ripper here
weight 5.7 ounce blade, 7.6 with sheath
Here's the trio of Kreins I experienced. TK 8 in brown micarta, TK8 in black G10, TK1 in black micarta
The TK8 in G10 is the best handle material I've encountered. The G10 is not a deep hand ripper but Tom beadblasts the surface to give a very nice looking, yet a great gripping surface.
All the blades are D2 steel.
The TK8 is a rock solid knife that fits in my hand like it was made for it. The blade is equally at home if forward or reverse grip.
I like lanyard holes in my fixed blades. And many folders also. The TK8 has a fine size lanyard hole. No skimping here.
I think I like the G10 fit in my hand better than the brown as the G10 is thinner and the brown is a bit rounder or thicker. Of course I've not yet used my TK8 other than to handle it.
The passaround just immediately felt like a solid piece of steel enclosed by my hand.
I've used the TK8 on all the usual edc tasks as well as food prep, veggies, fruits, steak and it was as fine a slicer dicer as I have. The TK8 is my preferred blade now
I slashed down some daisies that have passed their season and it was like I had a daisy whacker or scythe in my hand.
The D2 blade comes razor sharp and holds an edge well as you all know.
What;s interesting is the false edge. Note how thin the edge is. It wouldn't take much to put this to razor sharpness. Talking with Tom Krein this is no accident. Tom designs his blades to be used in all tyoes of situations. Putting an edge on this will be among my first chores when I get both hands. I like the idea of a blade sharp double side with a useable cutting edge on the top.
