Tom has sent me a few pictures of a knife he's been working on and is almost done with..........the first of 2009!

The 6 1/2" double-edged blade was already done but this will give an idea of the incredible amount of hand-work and the tremendous amount of fitting that he does making these dis-mountable pieces....amazing fit, finish and complexity.

This mainly shows off how the hilt is wire-wrapped, after first braiding/twisting stainless wire. He was using hard maple for the handle core but this one has laminated bamboo flooring....THAT will be stable and hard as a rock.

The wire has been bead-blasted for more grip...and a tutone effect...and it will have a Vorpal-style Kydex shoulder-rig. The knife has yet to be sharpened and if you have ever handled any of Tom's knives you know that he gets them SHARP!!!

This is Serial Number 915 and I'm sure that the new owner is going to be VERY HAPPY!

Here's Tom's secret to success and wire-wrapped hilts.........his lovely wife 'water skiing', as Tom calls it, holding a steady 15 pounds of pressure on the wire, which is hooked onto a fish scale, which he guides onto the handle, mounted into a lathe running at about 25rpm........a process that he has perfected over the years.

There'll be about 15 different parts and pieces all TIG'd up out of stainless that are fitted so precisely and perfectly that it's hard to imagine that the whole thing comes completely apart.....

This is similar piece made last year with a 5 1/2" blade to show the different pieces....all numbered for 'easy reassembly'.

Incredible piece, Dudley, thanks for sharing. Seeing the Shoemaker piece at Nordic brought back memories of both makers at a New York show.

Love the wire wrapped handle and great blade shape. Just a very cool piece Beautiful

that is sooo awesome.

Nice! I am so glad that he is back making knives again.

VERY cool and nice knife. The wire wrap process reminds me of how wrap is applied to pool cues.

A few more pictures of Tom, his fine Kydex and that awesome blade....looks like he can make a pretty mean holster, too.

Thanks for the comments about Tom and his work....I'm sure he appreciates it and maybe we can convince him to make all kinds of great 'stuff'. :D

very nice looking work and Tom is the master of the wire wrap. Scot Shoemaker

For those of you that are unaware, Tom was the guy that used thermo-formed Kydex for the very first time for a knife sheath(1982), showed Bob Terzuola his method and the rest is history.......if he had a nickle for every Kydex sheath/holster ever made we wouldn't be seeing this knife right now.......he wouldn't need to work at all. ;)

What remarkable talent Mr. Maringer possesses. Would really like to handle one as the grip offered by the wire should be exceptional. Guess it would be very durable as well.

That shoulder rig is very cool. Thanks for sharing Dudley.
