Sorry guys, but I have to disagree.

The Sebenzas that I own from CRK are not any sharper than the Talonite boot knife that I just received from Tom Mayo.

I thought BG42 was supposed to be a much better steel and have a much "sharper" edge than talonite. Why does this talonite knife "pop" hairs off better than by Sebenzas?

Possibly, your Sebenza needs sharpening or perhaps you prefer the bevel angle on the Mayo. Sharpness isn't something inherent in a knife. It's some thing you apply to a knife. It's task not a characteristic. Take care.

Gotta say, Mayo's got a great eye for aesthetics, I love his designs. As to the answer for your question, I agree with the above response by Fred, with the note that there is some element of "characteristic" in steel -- some seem to be able to take a fine edge more easily than others.

I also agree that an Edge is something you need to apply. Not all knives come with an optimal hair popping edge. And some steel seem to take a much sharper edge than others. That is one of the reasons that I like non-chromium carbon steels so much.

That said, from what I have read about talonite, it does not do well with super acute hair popping edges. Assuming equal edge geometry, I would think a freshly sharpened and stropped edge of BG42 would outperform a talonite edge. But I could be wrong. It is very difficult to compare the edges of different knives with different edge geometries.

Nice knife BTW

we are dealing with a lot of semantics here. I think the talonite will stay sharp LONGER than Bg42...I think Bg42 will stay very sharp longer than talonite....as many have said before....talonite loses its acute sharpness faster....as I said on the talonite thread...it takes a mediocre edge and holds it forever....to me..a mediocre edge MUST shave....definition.....there is a considerable difference in the hardness of the materials and thats where the very sharp part comes in...however....the difference in the molecular makeup allow the talonite to wear for much longer than many other high performance knife steels...

and thanks for the compliments.....post script...have to give the design credit to ray in austria for this one....

The two knives I got from Tom were the sharpest knives I've ever received, factory or handmade. Of course steel characteristics play a role in the sharpness of the knife, how long it holds its edge, etc. but I'll tell you this, Tom puts one heck of an edge on his knives. (He even sharpened my Sebenza's, and put an even better edge on those BG-42 blades) Have'nt seen or handled any of Tom's talonite knives yet. Hey Tom, maybe you can bring one with you when you come over to Maui in August? I'd love to check one out!

Now if he could just learn to drill evenly spaced holes...(grinning, laughing, running for cover)

I wasn't trying to open the debate on sharpness or the semantics there of, nor was I in anyway trying to knock CRK Sebenzas or their sharpness. I was just very surprised at how sharp the talonite is. I was prepared for something quite different. Even Tom said:as I said on the talonite thread...it takes a mediocre edge and holds it forever.....

If this is a mediocre edge to him, I am even more impressed with the quality of this knife...

Great knife! Thanks Tom!

Michael, nice knife, I look here the other day and the pic didn't show, so I didn't comment, but it looks to be a nice blade shape. Tom does some very good work! Congrats

OK, this is the real deal....
You see, Tom tests all of his knives on is rather thick, BACK hair!!! Once his knives will shave that stuff, and still hold and edge, it will POP the normal arm hair of anyone else

Very nice Tom, great shape, great grinds!!!

The spacing isn't TOO bad on this one, he's getting better, the real mistake is he forgot to drill one of the small holes in the bottom set

Keep up the good work tom, you'll get this hole drilling thing figured out eventually

Hate to say it, but that thing BEGS for a nice, Japanese style cord wrap.

BEAUTIFUL knife, Mr. Mayo!

Rock, thats what I first thought as well!, a little sting ray underneath and nice cord wrap!

That'd be very nice as well!

C4 if you need that done, let me know.
I have some burgundy stingray on hand right now.

Ray,

I like Tom's logo! How about if I just thank you for your design input! It truly is a great design and Tom did a kick ass job of grinding and sharpening it! It feels good in the hand and cuts great... Wonder how that ray skin would look

Just to give you an idea of what you can do with a little piece of stingray and cord wrap, epoxy coated. This is the very small knife by David Boye, his Basic1, customized this for a friend in Hawaii...little sheath as well, even though I don't do the fixed blade sheaths this one wouldn't fit into the original sheath David makes.
Michael on your knife the sting ray would extend to the edge, on David's there is a little well that the sting ray fitted into;

It's time consuming to do, but in this case it made a small all metal handled knife have a better griping surface.
