Tomahawk Companion to Saw

Tomahawk makes great companion to a medium folding saw (in my experiences).
Pair of shorts this days walk in, with hawk under belt at 4 o'clock and saw under belt at 8 o'clock made for a nice light weight hike & work day.

I carried a hatchet as a boy, and wish I had found a good hawk at a younger age :-/ As a boy, my tomahawks were fashioned from a flat stone and partial split stick (what little I knew & copied of "Native Hawks") or were cheap imitations (toys) of what I have come to know of a functional "trade hawk".

Stripping bark, in saw cut circumference, along with making and banging wood wedges w/ hawk greatly assisted the saw getting done the work of the hike.

At 11:20 into video I show and talk briefly about bark stripping mentioned above. The thicker the bark, the greater the reward :)

Additionally, I used hawk to make a few wood wedges to assist extending top compression cuts from one of the larger diameter branches. Grain direction of wedges should be perpendicular (opposite orientation from how we would select grain direction on a hawk haft, but similar to grain orientation of a wedge we would use for an axe handle eye). Wood wedges shown and discussed in video and "Description" (#7) comments. Wedges used to assist in extending the depth of top (compression) cut, and to help stabilize sway in the tensioned log during sawing motion.

Sorry I did not take more video related to the hawk use, wedge making, bark stripping, etc., etc., but the project was really about testing capabilities of this new saw and focusing on not getting stuck (the tensioned wood) part way through this project (hawk has been companion for over a decade), and evaluating the saw blade curve. Also, the mosquitos had my thinking/planning a little off ... (bastards !##! ... this trail borders our wetlands area and it was warm this day).

The video "Description" has a number of notes & comments listed that might be worth the read before watching video.

That saw is impressive! It made short work of those logs. I may need one for camping
