REVIEW – Tomahawk Defensive Program Level-One DVD

Produced by Shuri-Te Bujutsu-Kai DVD Series, Instructed by Mark Peavey and Nate Butler

General: I came across this DVD while searching YouTube and I had posted a brief teaser clip in the Tomahawk Training discussion page (page 4, post #80); seeing as it’s a new DVD and I couldn’t find anything else regarding it on my “Google-fu” searches, I decided I’d bite the bullet, buy it, and provide a review.
An excellent 63 minute DVD for the beginner or intermediate tomahawk enthusiast/student to further develop their skills. Based on more of a martial arts approach (compared to McLemore’s content), it provides strong basis for footwork, using both hands in attacking, blocking/deflecting and defensive drills, as well a comprehensive partner drills. Well demonstrated and explained step by step by two instructors, every move is justified taking into account follow-on actions from an attacker which may not be considered, including lethal/less-than lethal methods. The entire tomahawk is utilized (blade, spike, pommel, flat side of the head, top edge for thrusting/hitting, haft).

Layout: You can either watch the DVD in its entirety or choose specific chapters as you wish. The DVD has excellent layout and progression from chapter to chapter.
Topics being reviewed: In sequence as offered in the root menu:
1- Intro Action Clips
2- Introduction to the Tomahawk
3- Evasive Footwork
4- Moving the Tomahawk, 10 Lines of Attack
5- Blocking and Redirecting
6- Combative Defensive Applications using the 10 Lines of Attack
7- Flow Sparring with the Tomahawk
8- Attacking with the Free Hand while Moving the Tomahawk
9- Free Flowing Practice with the Tomahawk
(10-12 – Special thanks, Contact Info and Additional DVD’s available)

Overall Impression: Pleasantly impressed with the purchase. The lessons are easy to follow, logical and thoroughly explained. Although I personally find the Ten Lines of Attack a bit much (I prefer keeping it to four basic lines), and some of their blocking procedures I would personally not use, they do provide a different approach with certain similarities found in other material on the market. The fact that both instructors take turns on the offensive/defensive allows the viewer to see different application concurrently and effective methods of training. Seeing as the DVD states “Training Program Level-ONE”, I wonder if there will be follow on DVDs with more in-depth and complicated applications.
