I didn't find anything with regards to this DVD on the boards so I figured I'd write a short review for those interested.
REVIEW – TOMAHAWK FOR CQC
Produced by Modern Combative Systems, Co-produced by RMJ Tactical and b’morereel
General: This DVD offers approaches which are either not touched upon, or very briefly introduced in other DVDs available on the market. With an emphasis on hooking techniques, the DVD by Modern Combative Systems offers a valuable tool in any tomahawk fighting student or enthusiast. A fast pace, no non-sense approach allows the viewer to quickly grasp simple concepts such as blocking or hooking, as well as follow-up moves focusing primarily on the defensive use of the tomahawk. Using the RMJ Shrike nylon trainer as a training aid, the value of the elongated spike and sharpened beard is exploited to its full advantage in every lesson.
Layout: The root menu of the DVD is easy to navigate and clearly describes what will be taught within each lesson. Although they are short lessons, with minimal actual verbal instruction, it is easy to follow along and understand the dynamics of the actions being performed. The only downside of the technical aspect is that at the end of a lesson you are returned to the root menu to select which lesson to watch next, instead of a seamless transition to the next chapter.
Topics being reviewed: In sequence as offered in the root menu:
1- Hawk Intro
2- Specs and Carry Options
3- Tomahawk Advantage
4- Combative Anatomy
5- Grips, Blocks, Ready Position
6- Striking Parts
7- Hooking and Trapping
8- Tomahawk Application
9- Additional Info
Overall Impression: Although perhaps not the most professional appearing DVD on the market, the Tomahawk for CQC by Modern Combative Systems (and RMJ Tactical/b’morereel) does offer some valuable insight into the use of the beard for hooking as well at catching an opponent’s limb or weapon. With most techniques being displayed by two people it is easily to grasp the concept being demonstrated. One downside which was identified is the lack of foot work. This DVD does merit its place in the repertoire of any tomahawk fighting enthusiast or student, available from RMJ Tactical for $29.00 (+$3.00 PnP in the US)or directly from Modern Combative Systems for $40.00.
Rating: 3.5 / 5
