Does anyone know if carrying a Tomahawk in your car is blatantly illegal? I know certain ordinances have laws regulating carry of all kinds of blades but I have never seen something prohibitting this kind of tool... I live in Tennessee and I think our law states against ice picks, daggers, and blades over 4 inches.. but i dont recall seeing hatchet or tomahawk carry illegal.. can someone shed some light here....

I was pulled over in Live Oak (a San Antonio, Texas suburb town) and searched (long story/previously posted) and it seems if I had my Bowie I would have been in trouble, but the Gerber Axe I had under the seat was not a problem.
After the search for 'weapons or contraband', one of the deputies specifically said, "He has an axe in there, but there is no law against that."
Figure that.
Of course a camp axe is a tool, and unlike a 'hawk, not specifically designed as a weapon....

I would think carrying a 'hawk in Tennessee should be a cultural and historical right as I feel carrying a Bowie should be in Texas. Part of my inherent right as a native born Texan.

Merek, as a result of flaming media stories about Bowie Knife duels killing men left and right in the 1830s and 1840s, up until Sam Colt's revolvers took over from the single shot pistol, the Bowie Knife became like the switchblade and the "assault weapon" (sic), the weapon that was "about to end civilization as we know it." The result was a hue and cry to get them banned and many of the states in the South and the Old Southwest did just that, including Arkansas and Texas. Perhaps Louisiana banned them as well for a while. They were banned in Virginia until relatively recently and I believe that they are still banned in Maryland.

I think this may very well be the greatest thing i have read on blade forums... :D VERY VERY VERY true. Though the ATC makes hawks for combat or as weapons i guess, i still think that they can be carried in the car and used for a plethora of tasks, non SD related.... I am an avid camper when i am not in class and at a FTX with my batallion, so i have plenty of reasons for one, however, i like the cultural right that you spoke of. very nice sir.

You can carry a Bowie Knife that does not have a blade longer than 4 inches in TN. Trust me, I grew up here and have been living here my entire life. I guess you can have the intent to go armed with a 3.95 inche blade though cant you and its legal!!!! ;)

This law was made back in the late 1800'2 I would say... Very dated as many knife laws are....
