I want to re-handle my tomahawk, I don't know what type or style it is and does it really matter? Should I just buy a standard handle and trim it to what I need.

I used to make mine out of sledgehammer handles. It's a little time consuming but it's also fun and you can get exactly what you want that way.

Most tomahawks use a slightly tapered round handle. That way you can just slide the head up the handle, and not worry about wedges. I guess it depends on if the eye of the head is round or oval, as far as the end shape of your handle.

The eye is more teardrop then oval or round.

Yeah, its hard to see from the pictures. you could order an extra from Cold Steel. It may not fit, but its cheap.

Here are better pics of the eye, does the blade style tell what kind of hawk it is?

Odd shape but tapered, you could buy a regular teardrop haft and modify to fit....most hawks have a sharper point at the bottom,as do the hafts..

for the dimensions of the eye. the width is 1 inch and at the longest 1 1/4 inch. Is this a throwing hawk or another type. I bought it about thirty years ago from a gun store that catered to the black powder crowd. I want to order a handle and I hope a standard 19" will work.

I measured a handle from Crazy Crow and one from Dunlap, they both measure 1 1/8" by 1 5/8" pretty close.you'll have to grind the point off some and that is probably a throwing hawk..crazy crow's are pretty good and a little fatter for your hand.. and cheap 3 to 4 bucks,if you throw order a few cause you will break some..The hawk dosent look like a fold and wrap forge weld more a solid piece of stock.hope this helps.....Butch

or you could make your own,I did for awhile, but I make a lot of hawks.

Thanks for the answers and yeah it's solid. Is it possible to add a spike to the back end. I found a small stress crack while cleaning it up so I'm going to make it a wall hanger. I figure to drill and tap a hole in the back portion of the eye but I can't find a threaded spike or hammer type head to put there. fetish spikes are the only pre made threaded spike big enough but they won't go with my theme setup.

Well here is my hafted tomahawk, I used an old mattock handle that had busted. Came pretty good, also pics of the cracks in the blade. Use it or Hang it?
