Greetings all,
This is my first time venturing into this section of the forums. I do so in the hopes of learning a little more about Tomahawks. I have never owned one and I am thinking about purchasing one mainly for the craftsmanship, but I wouldn't mind getting the hang of throwing one with precision. So my primary question would be what is the best "Entry Level" model for a beginner?? Something that I wouldn't be in fear of breaking every time I release it, yet my bank account doesn't fear either??(If there is a model that fits this bill and is all or at least partially black to match my tacitical gear, that would be prefered) Thanks allot Jason

Go with the Brend. I have one and I LOVE it. I have beat the crap out of mine and it just begs for more. It is not possible to remember how many throws that thing has had, but it is a lot. That is mostly what I do with it. Its one piece design makes me worry about it less. I figure any on piece is stronger than the best made two piece, although, I am going to get a Next Gen Ranger within the next year. My Brend was my entry level, just getting to know you, type of Hawk, and I am now a believer in ATC and their products. Thats why I am willing to spend the cash (when I manage to save any) on their "top of the line" model, but my trusty Brend will always be near me and get plenty of flight time. Forgot to add, its only a hundred bucks, so thats good for your wallet, and it is all black, so it appeals to your sense of fashion.:p Anyway, if you can't tell, I think you should go with the Brend.:D

Thanks for the heads up. It looks like that is my best option. By the way, Have you had much luck as a beginner thrower? Thanks

Let me preface this by saying that I had absolutely no throwing experience before this! The first couple of days, I would get maybe 1 stick out of 10-15 throws and that was frustrating. But, I was trying too hard. When I held the hawk loosely(hope that makes sense) and let it "fly" out of my hand my stick count started going up. I can now get 8-10 sticks in a row easy. Also, my soon to be 11 year old son loves throwing and is pretty good at it too. Here is a link to some pics of my hawk when it was still pretty new(it has much more "character" now) and a really low quality video of me getting 4 or 5 sticks in a row. I will try to get some new pics up soon. That will give you an idea of how the finish holds up.

I have found that the white triangle from my Spyderco sharpmaker works best. I use it like a file and it does pretty good. I'm sure many people here remember my struggle to sharpen a hawk:rolleyes: but I finally got the hang of it. If I can do it anyone can:D

Thanks, I was hoping the sharpmaker could do a good job. I will be sure to post once I finally get one, most likely some time next month.:)

I have a Brend, but it's a one of a kind Mirror polished on, that I will display only. I think the other fellow is right, and you should probably buy a brend. If you are an ATC club member, which if you are not, you should be, you can buy a Brend that is specifically made for throwing for $95. It has a few modifications done to it for an easier release, and if I remember correctly balance a little better for throwing. Like the other fellow said as well, one slab of metal won't break.
But....I started out with a VT, all black, a little more $, but 5 suttin edges! I threw it the first time and for it to stick! Then a second, a third...I threw it over a dozen times before I didn't sink it, and that was just because I hit a knot in the wood and did not throw it hard enough. It's a toss up, Either way, you are good to go, but I would buy a VT. It is a Tomahawk. The Brend is a Hatchet. Just think about it alot before you buy. If you have further questions, pots them. I've got an Hayes, Max, RR, VT, the brend I spoke of above, and the Flagship...The NG Ranger. I can stick that thing underhanded! (not easy though) The NG Ranger...well it's pricy, but it's my favorite.
It I had one Hawk though, I'd get a VT.
If you have any serious questions, e-mail me at
tonyjacobs007@hotmail.com I will give you as much info as I've got, and I've got a lot. I've used my hawks for all types of things, including finishing off a groundhog that just would not die! The Hawk toof care of it though. Beleive me! :barf:

I should wear a sign that says...WILL WORK FOR NG RANGER...:D

With the economy the way it is, and jobs being scarce, i have to way purchases...Food VS Tomahawks... :( ;)

Hi Everyone,

I've never been to the ATC forum before, but some names here look familiar from HI forum.

Glad to hear good things about the Brend. I just ordered one for my brother for Xmas:) I just hope he actually GETS it for Xmas after I've held it!
