Hey guys I have been thinking about picking up a Cold Steel Tomahawk of some sort. I have not decided on a model yet. Any other ideas? And what would be a simple way to keep them sharp? Thanks.

Unless you like the specific look of a certain hawk, I'd suggest one with a hammer pole, them being the trail hawk, pipe hawk, or riflemans hawk
Have that extra working side just in case you need to drive stakes or whatnot, and to the best of my knowledge, the weight pole behind the blade helps the bit track straight when chopping

As for keeping them sharp, I convexed my edge and after some light use, the edge is still sharp enough for me not to worry about sharpening it again, but I would use the same stuff that you would use to keep your knives sharp

Cool thanks for the reply. Good info.

I like the Pipe Hawk myself. The extra edge length, weight, and larger hammer poll make it a better woods tool in my opinion.

I always carry a puck style sharpening stone if I will be in the woods for an extended period. Otherwise, I touch up after my return home.

The Rifleman's hawk is great, but it is big. I have to choke up on the handle 4" or so to feel comfortable.

I like the new frontier, for the look and feel, really, because I don't need a hawk for my woods activities.

What will it be used for? Why a hawk rather than an axe?

A high quality file and double-sided stone is plenty to keep the edge in shape.

That's the nice thing about axes and 'hawks--as long as you're not buying the GB stone, the sharpening tools are CHEAP.

I have a dual sided file that I like to use on my axe or hawk instead of the stone. I set it up for my machete use and carried it over to my hawk. It is a small fine mill file with one side smoothed out on the sander plate in my shop. This gives me a fine smooth edge for finishing and still have the other side for getting it straightened up. I cut off the tang shorter and added a g-10 little block with a hole after heating the tang up and shoving it in. I then just made a slip sheath of kydex that I can attach to my machete sheath or put it into the pack.
