Tomahawk Tanto, opinions?

Are there any opinions on these knives, particularly the Tanto XL-350 model. A local store has it for $17.99. I wanted to get this knife and wrap 550 cord on it...Just a fun knife for under $30, how does this knife (which is advertised as having "high carbon steel") compare to a Ka-Bar tanto at $39.99?

Dunno for sure, but at that price, I can guarantee you that the knife isn't going to be good for anything but show.

If you want something that will actually cut, get the KA-BAR, if you just want a "scary knife" to show your knife-ignorant friends, go for this.

It's hard to judge something on the basis of price alone, but then again, "you get what you pay for" is one cliche that tends to hold true. For under $30, you can do better. If you want functionality, many swiss army knives sell for less than $30. If you want something scary looking, get an ontario machete or something. You could also take a look at the exchange forums--good stuff pops up there on a regular basis.

Are the Ontario knives as good as the Ka-Bars? They are the same average prices at the local stores...

A self-defense teacher I know dulls those Tomahawk knives and uses them as training blades.
I don't have any first hand experience with those knives, but since he knows about quality cutlery and modifies them to be inexpensive dummies, they can't be very good.

Ok, that sounds good. Well, I may go pick it up nonetheless...I don't expect much out of a $18 knife...If nothing else its a nice knife to use for things that more expensive knives could be ruined with.

thanks for the advice...i will report further upon future inspection.

If anyone has any other thoughts, please post...

Do not waste your money. For $18, you could purchase a Cold Steel Bushman, and chop the tomahawk into little pieces with it. For another $20, you can get the knife that that tomahawk has ripped off its design from, Ontario.

Is Ka-Bar better than Ontario? Because their pricing seams to be in the same average range...

Yes, I believe Ka-Bar is better than Ontario. Ontario make good "toss around" knives that you can beat up and not worry too much about. The problem with them is their coating isn't as good and they just don't have much attention to detail put into their knives -- but for their price, they aren't bad at all.

The Ka-Bar Tanto will be a lot better, but the blade is a touch thin, in my own opinion.
