I just finished and sent this hawk out to a customer today. The damascus is 88 layers made from 1084 & 15n20, I took a hand grinder after I had it forged fairly close to shape and cut grooves like doing a ladder pattern, then finished forgeing to shape. The handle, curly maple dyed with leather dye and then hand rubbed with boiled linseed oil, has damascus caps on top and bottom and a nickel/ silver escushion plate embedded smooth with the surface of the handle on both sides.

Thanks
Bill

Man that is really SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!
Awesome pattern in the Blade. The escushion plate is a really nice touch also.

You're getting too good, you need to lay off for a while Mr. Buxton:eek:

Very elegant, I love it!

While I was waiting for this thread to open I was thinking how it's time for you to start embellishing these babies...and I see you are! Bill you make this look easy, so I know it's perfect. That is one beautiful piece of work and you have another happy customer. That curly maple is great too.

Thanks everyone for the nice compliments. They are really appreciated. ;) Most people that inquire about 1 of my hawks don't realize what it takes to make 1. They can be quite aggrevating, for me anyway, tring to keep everything lined up and true, and the amount of damascus that it takes to make 1 would easily make 2 or 3 medium size hunting knives. I've had a few hawks completely forged to shape and straightened up, shear the welds when I would drop the drift in that last time to clean the hole up, thats when its really painful. But I do like making these things, and your comments mean a great deal.

Thanks
Bill

Nice, Bill. A good example of how not a huge amount of manipulation can add a great deal of "motion" and life to the steel. Very cool.

I bet Leroy sure likes making all these hawk billets! Keeps his oil warm and his dies hot as winter approaches....

Bill,
Nice job on the hawk!!! I've always wondered what they look like with a handle. Nice combination between the damascus and the strips on the handle, also like the caps on the ends. My worst problem so far is not having any handles on hand except for a couple I have just to check for fit. I'll be ordering some Monday. Going to be doing a gun/knife show in a few hours with some hawk heads and knives. I just hope I'm not totally waisting my time.....Ray

Yes Fitz, leroy likes making all these billets, but your going to find this out for yourself as soon as we get leroys brother built for you. Mag, said he received the cylinder and motor yesterday, so its just a matter of time now.

Ray,
Knife and gun shows can be a real joy or a real downer. I've done shows where people wouldn't hardly give my stuff a second look and shows that people would hang around my table like flies to sugar. Just take in all you can no matter what the out come and enjoy meeting other people, thats one thing I have to say about the shows I've done, I've met some very interesting and enjoyable people and made some life long friends worth more then any knife I've ever sold.
As for the hawk handles I make all mine from 2"x2"x20" turning stock.I too would like to try a couple ordered premade handles, that would speed up hawk production by at least 2 hrs. for me.

Good Luck
Bill

Bill, This is my first gun/knife show in about 4 years, all you said is true. The premade handles aren't much money and sure speed up time with a lot less dust in the shop. Where did you get the curley maple? Did that come in the 2x2s also? I really like the looks of that handle.....I need to get my butt in gear and head for the show....Ray

hi Bill, this is DaQo'tah

nice looking work!
and, Nice looking photos of your work, and thats also why I write to you today...

I would very much like to know how you built this thingy,,,I would like to know, the steps you take,,,I would like to understand the work you put into this weapon.

so,,,um,,,ever thought of a step-by-step photo on a webpage?

Thanks DaQo'tah, I have throught about doing a step by step visual for the way I make a hawk, but I work by myself all the time and that makes it stuff taking pictures. My wife is about to be laid off for the winter, so maybe I can get her to come out and take a few pics for me. I'll see what I can do in a couple weeks when her works done, if it works out I'll try to get this on my web site.

Thanks,

Bill
