I'm thinking of getting a TomTom one to use in my and my wife's cars. Any thoughts?

For the uninitiated, and I was one until moments ago, a TomTom One is a GPS-based navigation system

Thank you google.

I've, obviously, never used one; but it certainly looks impressive. I like the big display.

And the suggested retail price of $250 makes it pretty competitive for this sort of product.

I have one (no pun intended!) and really like it. Easy to use. It's a basic unit but does everything I need. Another one you might look at is the Garmin Nuvi 350. It's a little more money, but it has text-to-speech and it also gives the addresses and phone numbers of the POI's such as restaurants which the Tom Tom doesn't do. It also breaks down the restaurants by type, if that's important to you. You won't go wrong with either.

I'm sure you've already heard this, but from what other people say tomtom's north american maps aren't as detailed as garmin's, but they have better european map.

I drive two units, one has tomtom the other has a GARMIN. Garmin by leaps and bounds for accuracy and other info tomtom doesnt have. You can customize tomtom for voices, thats about it. The mafia guy is kinda funny but gets old. A year ago I thought GPS in cars was for sissies.....I feel nekkid w/o one now. Everything I drive now gets a GPS. My sweetheart never gets lost anymore. Very cool gadget,a must have IMO.

Tom Tom does everything I need it for in a city environment. It sometimes steers you the long way around, but this usually due to the software not being updated. You can do updates on the Tom Tom website.

Basic unit, no bells and whistles, but very good value for money IMO.
