been awhile since i have been on,,I need some info on making your own forgeing tongs, any good books out there,or online.need some good ones, piece of steel flew up the other day and broke my glasses, was close,so i learned a lesson, royboy

royboy -- there have been a couple other threads on the same subject just in the last week or so. There was some real good information in a couple of posts. Suggest you do a search, you should find it helpful.

Good luck,

My first tongs, that I still use, were made the easy way. Just some 1/4" X 1/2" stock as long as you want the tongs, rivet togather as far back as you want the jaws. I put the rivet about 3" back. Then heat the jaw part of the tongs and twist 90 degrees. I was worried about the rivet movement but found that just by heating and moving the tongs the rivet eased, making them work well. Whole thing from start to finish about 10 minutes.
Easily, Lynn

lynn, was that 1/4in thick by 1/2 in wide on stock for tongs.also can you use mild steel,or is it medium carbon.thanks for the replys guys. royboy..... ..

RobRoy,
Yes, I used mild steel 1/2" wide. I guess I cheated by drilling the rivet holes but it was quick and easy. I actually drew out the handles, more as an excercise in doing it then necessity.
If it takes more than a few minutes something's wrong.
These are not as usefull as the tongs in anvil fire but they have a long reach for recovering something in the bottom of my Don Fogg type forge.
Later, Lynn
