New here;

Never owned a Tonto blade before. Any ideas on the best way to sharpen them and with what type of system i.e. sticks or stones.

Thanks
Kim

Do you mean tanto?Just sharpen it the same way as the rest of the blade unless it is an apple seed grind as they require a bit more skill.

Study the many aspects of sharpening. You can easily mess-up a blade!

Kim, welcome to Bladeforums! :)

The guys never miss a chance to tease each other. You were sure to catch it for that. :D

The tanto is the easiest to sharpen, outside of a wharncliffe. Just lay that straight edge on a stone at a proper angle and go for it. You can certainly use the Sharpmaker. Once the main edge is done, do the forward edge separately.

My tanto Sebenza has a hollow ground main edge, which sharpens easily, and a convex (apple-seed) forward edge. You can sharpen this on a stone but a strop retains the convex edge better.

Well said! :thumbup: This method is the best way I've found to sharpen Tanto's.

Oh, and welcome to BladeForums! :D

Anyone think he might have actually meant a tonto knife? ;)

Tell the Lone Ranger that it's dull, and he will probably sharpen it for you.

Just kidding Kim. Esav is right, tantos are pretty easy to sharpen, now you know how to do it. If you have any problems though, feel free to ask, lots of folks here are more than willing to help.
