Too many flashlights

Hey guys,

I need some help buying a flashlight. I really like the looks of the surefires so i went on their website to see what the options are. I am completely overwhelmed. I like the idea of getting one that can be used for self defense(blinding an attacker) although I dont know what the lumen rating would have to be for a flashlight to do that. I dont know if i should get a rechargable or battery(seems the battery life is low with the higher output models), incandescent,LED, or HID, and i want to spend around $100. Also i would be putting it in my pocket so one that is comfortable would be nice.

Thanks for any help.

I just bought a Fenix P1. It is really bright and really small. I like it, I bought it for $50.00 at Tadgear.com

I like the FireFly III myself. Same form factor as the Fenix P1, but variable brightness. It's very bright on low, and amazing on max. It uses rechargeables. It replaced my Arc AAA, Longbow Micra and Streamlight Scorpion in one small package. The price is 130US, including battery and charger. Doug should have another batch ready in August (although his delivery time estimating batting average is pretty low:D ).

Welcome to Bladeforums!!
If you want to stick with Surefire, I would recommend the L1 or L2. They are a little more then $100.00, but it gives you the option of a high/low beam.
Something else, but it isn't a Surefire, is the HDS LED lights. They have some on closeout now, that are around $100.00 and will run off a rechargable battery.
Some links and prices:
Basic 42 $90.00
Basic 42GT $95.00
Basic 42XR $95.00
Basic 42XRGT $99.00

i recommend the Surefire E2D. I have one, and it is wonderful. It will run you in the 120.00 range.

I think, the average brightness required to blind someone at night is around 65 lumens, although that's kind of a subjective rating. I mean it would depend on the person, the amount of ambient light, and how adapted they are to light at the moment. but 65 lumens is what surefire quotes for "defensive purpose."

you are right, battery life is fairly low for high-output flashlights, but it's not so bad. plus, surefire 123a lithium batteries are generally fairly reasonable (1-2.00/batt). to be honest with you, i rarely ever have to change lithium 123a's-- i just don't use my flashlight often enough.

if i was you i'd get a nice, high output flashlight for utilitarian purposes and a small, lithium LED light on your keychain for everyday, mundane tasks.

if ya are gonna carry in your pocket i wouldnt get the E2D the crennellations will tear the heck outta your pocket over time, get the E2e or a E2L, the L is LED and the batts last a whole lot longer & they are still plenty bright. the E2e is also good, i like the E series smaller lites better for edc than the M2/C2/G2/etc stuff which is a little wider/heavier and just a small bit brighter, imho these are more lights to carry to use with a handgun/rifle vs a utility light like the E series, though the E series would be fine in that regard too imho.

the fenix lights are also very good, high quality lites, the are not nearly as bright as a E2e or E2L though, but good lites nonetheless and use std alkaline AA batts with very good life to boot.

Check out Fenix-store.com, they're selling the L2p plus an L1p body for $42 ish. I bought this and ordered a second L1p I was so impressed. Uses 1AA battery for the L1 and 2AA for the L2 so getting batteries will never be a problem. This is one impressive bit of kit for the bucks!!!

Try ebay...got my E2D for $75.00. Great flshlight for plaincloths / off duty carry.

I got a surefire aviator A2 off E-bay for $120 and i am very happy with it. My favorite feature is the 3 lumen red LED, in addition to the main lamp, because in total darkness when you fire up the main 65 lumen lamp, the brightness kills your nightvision. Not so with the low light LED function.

Get an L2 or an L4 if you're set on going surefire. Personally I like the HDS series better, I've got an HDS EDC B60LE and love it. It doesn't touch the FFIII IMHO though. That little bugger put a stop to my light buying. Its damn near perfect. Programmable, multiple levels (again programmable), and BRIGHT as hell. I've never had a light that came close to it. Check out this link.

My pentagon l2 came in yesterday. 65 lumen led, nice hot spot, good spill, and 90 minute peak with 5 hours usable output. No bells and whistles, just momentary and on. only $75 for the haIII finish. Built like a tank. There is a whole lot more than surefire out there, with SF you are paying royalties for the name, and their QC has been questionable as of late. search for pentagonlight.com. bought mine at lighthound.com
