First coffee warming my hands and I had to come across a gem like that . O:K: had my rant . Time to move on . Been there done that . All that crap .

Lets talk about something a lot more interesting .

The Cold Steel Spike Tanto . I would like to know what would be considered an acceptable survivable series of tests for the knife . I don,t want to destroy the knife or really scratch her up too bad . I know kind of wussy !
What would be a few tasks that a useable knife should be able to perform ? . (within its limits ) An idea of one of this knifes limitations would be cleaning big game . While I am sure I could I wouldn,t want to clean a deer with it .
Obviously this knife might be better suited for puncturing .
I will throw out the first criteria for such a knife . Sharpening . Just how would you sharpen such a knife ?
I realise this isn,t the clearest of posts . I,ve had my first coffee now and am waiting for your replies .

Dude, exactly how cold *is it* where you are?

Did you mean this as a response to another thread?

As far as the CS tanto Spike goes, it's a stabber. Any other use is minimal. Maybe stirring the ashes in a fireplace.

The profile is too thick and the steel is too low grade for serious sharpening.

what about simply trying to eat with it?
sliccing onions, cutting carrot, paring meat etc..
After all, that's first a knife...
after one hour of fooding, describe how you feel it in your hand, etc...

That's the kind of test i am interested in, as i never use my knives as achet or batoning...

Tie it to the end of a long walking stick and use it to hunt wild boar. Lynn Thompson would be proud :D

REPLY: They don,t make a walking stick long enough ! L:O:L
Actuall while this knife would be suited to both puncturing and surviving such an ordeal . I am not sure I would survive !

REPLY : Yes part of my post was in response to another post that was deemed unworthy of inteligent members . Proabably violated a couple of laws also !

It is not the first time I have heard that the steel is low grade . It says "420 sub zero quenched . Just what exactly does that mean ?
I had planned on throwing this knife a little and proabably testing its puncture proof characteristics . Beyond that I just thought it was a neat design .

Most have been doing it all along but supposedly someone in marketing caught wind that maybe if they mentioned in now in the ads that it would step up the credibility of the bottom of the barrel steel they are offering.

Sub zero quenching is supposed to aid the steel turning to martensite from austensite. It is supposed to assure a more complete transformation of the grain structure by getting the steel cold enough so they wear better and get harder.

Hey Guys...

Esav is correct...
The only thing it's about good for is a sticker..The grind is on such an angle that you can't cut food that well with it..
It's slice and peel and apple,,but thats about it...

Another good use for it around camp..

You know those little pickled onions that are sometimes in with pickles ?

It's good to get the last ones of those out of a deep jar...

ttyle

Eric....:)
