Too rare to modify? Too rare to repair?

My only Memorial weekend axe acquisition: 12.5 oz without the handle. I got it because it's the smallest I've seen and it was only $1.
First I was going to forge-weld and reshape the split hammer-peen. Then I thought if I drew out the hammer into a tapered square spike I'd be pretty close to the Fort William Henry Roger's Rangers fighting hatchet.

But I found a 3-yr-old post by Devilpig that allowed me to ID the maker as D.R.Barton, and date it to 1849 - 1874.
I think I can repair the hammer without losing much, if any, more of the stamp. I'm sure if I draw out a spike I'll lose the stamp and change the nature of the artefact. Or I could leave it alone and use it, or I could leave it alone and look at it. What do you think?

Here's a close-up of the damage. I may be kidding myself about saving much of the stamp.

I agree with the above fellas. The only DR Barton piece I have is an exceptional spoon gouge.

Well, that makes life easier.
And I do hesitate to mess up a tool that can't be more than a year younger than the gun that won the west.
Thanks for your input.
