Too Thin to CAK

I am a skinny guy. 5'11" and floating around 130lbs, I'm nowhere near strong enough or heavy enough to wield this beast of an AK. And that makes me sad!

But you know what? I've come to terms with it, because a while back I bought a khuk that makes me forget all about the unwieldy creature that my twig-like arms are incapable of wielding. This beauty is 12" and just shy of 1/2" at the thickest point. A little villager CAK I got on DOTD a while back because the scabby was a teeny bit tight. Anyway, to the point of this...

Anyone have a hint on why, oh why it seems that this smaller khuk seems to deal more damage when I'm chopping? Perhaps I just wield the large one awkwardly, and my lack of skill with the heavier blade makes my technique bad. A curiosity, maybe someone else has an idea.

Oh, and my anniversary is coming up. A gift for my fiancee? A Tamang khukri.

That would be my best educated guess, without being able to see you chop.
The larger ones do take some technique to wield properly. Practice makes perfect.

Another vote for technique:)

Like all things technical in nature, chopping with a khuk requires rhythm and flow. The blade must fit the user and the user has to be able to control the blade.

In the end, the khuk we need finds us:)

I have to agree with the fact that the weapon must fit the user. No mater how impressive a big knife or sword is if you don't have the right combo of strength and skill its not going to do what you want it to do with any grace or efficency.

I think it depends on a lot of factors.

How you chop.

The thickness of the edge.

For me anything over about 27 oz is too heavy to chop well unless I'm felling a tree or something.

might be something to do with self-confidence, as well.

If you think you are awkward, clumsy, or unsafe with the larger blade, you may be triggering an anticipation of some khukric disaster.

With the very capable 12 in blade, you may have a sense of control so far in excess of your previous experience that you use the edge in a perfect harmony of shoulder, arm, and wrist snap, each motion reinforcing your compatibility with the edged tool.

I'm a big fan of the 12in AKs.

I have noticed similar physics, kind of in reverse. I can wield my 18" WW II as if it's an extension of my arm. On the other hand my 18" CAK is too heavy for long term use, unless I'm cutting something very big.
On the other hand when I use my wifes 12" AK, it feels ineffective in my hand and yet when she uses it,(A 5' 3" lady with powerful short arms and muscular shoulders), she cuts vines, driftwood or small saplings like a hot knife through butter:)

Glad you found a khuk that suits you, or rather that it found you.

The Tamang is one of the real 'sleepers' in the HI product line, I like mine very much, its thinner and lighter than many other HI Khuk's of the same size and it looks great too, especially in the newly released Dhar wood.
