I've been carrying a pocket knife of one sort or another since my first Swiss Army knife that I got as a present for my 10th birthday, and I have NEVER dropped an open knife, until tonight.

My beautiful brand new Spyderco Military 2, only a couple months old, was getting a good stropping when the friction took it right out of my hand and it landed tip down on my workshop's concrete floor and chipped the tip.

It isn't a big chip, and can probably be sharpened out (pictures coming tomorrow) but man did it hurt 😢

At least it wasn't my new GT Recon or anything.

Glad it didn’t land on your foot
Yeah I hate that .
Not kidding ; had my very sharp/polished edge HAP40 , with aftermarket Titanium scales , do a swan dive off my dressing table (OK it was just an ordinary table , but I was changing clothes next to it ) . Goofy knife nerd habit I have of taking the EDC out of my pocket , opening it and enjoying looking at it while I am changiing clothes ( another entry for the thread : You May Be A Knife Geek If You . . . ) .

knife stuck in the side of my foot then fell over onto the floor .

Dudes ; this is another argument for polished edges :
Self inflicted wounds heal faster / less damage to cells if your edge is polished .
Healed surprisingly fast though the area looked a little bruised black and blue while it did it .
Nice scar .

There have been several others but without blood .
One instance I posted a thread on it : something about lock type vs physical impediments .
e.g. I had my splitting fingers taped up and that limited my ability to operate a compression lock adequately and the knife jumped out of my fingers (Para2 M4). Didn't hurt the knife in the least ; bounced off some stuff and landed on wood floor .
I've since learned : when taped to flip the knife over in my grip and work the lock with my thumb (rather than pinch with index finger) and the blade drops but only choil area of blade contacts my hand .

Oh yes . . . !
Here you go !!!
This is the cool one :
I dropped my Para 2 on concrete in my shop . . .
and . . .
the tip stuck in the concrete and the concrete died .
The tip was fine !
You got to love a good heat treat !
I forget which alloy that was now , M4 or 15V I think .

I feel your pain. I had a similar incident a few years ago. I had just finished re-profiling the edge on a knife of a different brand on my Wicked Edge sharpener.

Got all done and when I unscrewed the clamp, I forgot to hold onto the knife. Really dumb mistake.

The knife fell out of the clamp and onto a concrete floor. Chipped my new edge up so bad that I had to start all over again.

One time waterway was falling down and I broke its fall with my bare foot. Don't know wtf I was thinking, happened automatically. Usually a folder is falling and I'm jumping out of the way like a cat, spreading my feet apart (looks funny), but in this case my foot swiped at the knife from the side and made it land softly on exposed concrete in basement.
15v Manix fell tip down in concrete and i could see tip missing a little bit, but it was still sharp somehow.
Dropped endura in zdp in the past with tip damage and another time Mantra fell from dresser into my foot lol. Was a bit of a cut on top of my foot but avoided painful areas I guess, healed fast.
What do I win :)?

Reread OPs post. Damn military 2 has a fine tip, hope it's not too bad.

Thank you! DITTO

I was ASTOUNDED at how well it held up all things considered. It landed TIP FIRST onto concrete from about a 4' drop. It's a testament to Spyderco's metalcrafting that it held up so well. I've been meaning to grab a picture all day, but haven't had the time. Maybe I'll run and do it now and post the pic in a few minutes

S30V. It's just a plain ol' stock Mil2
Nothing wrong with good ol s30v. I think I may pick up an all black military 2 in that steel next sale. Let us see how it sharpens out, I had to do something similar with an OG military I dropped... Tried to thumb flick it and it flicked out, partially why I sold it not enough for me to grip being tip down only whereas tip up let's me grab the clip with my fingers.

I'm not going to go out of my way to sharpen it. It still works just fine. The chip is almost invisible, and you can tell it's still got a good point and 99.9% of it's edge. I'm going to sharpen it here and there when needed over time and see if it washes out eventually.

I dropped a freshly sharpened M4 osborne once, it landed tip down, luckily on a carpeted floor. I was wearing shoes and jeans. Jeans got sliced open at the cuff, and my shoes got a huge gash in them. Knife was fine.

Could easily have been my achilles though 😳

At least you didn't do what I always do when I drop a knife. I spastically go to grab/catch it & it cuts me.
