Took the 119 out yesterday

I hear all these stories that 420HC is sub par with todays new steel.

I was having a rough day yesterday, so I thought I would take a walk around in the woods. I took my 119 with me. There were a few downed trees that I went to town on. I batoned through hard wood, chopped branches in half, and peeled the bark off of some of the wood. I applied side pressure to see if it flexed, but this 119 is a tough knife. It still had a good edge on it, and cuts just as good as when I walked in the woods. Buck knows what they are doing. I did not get any rolled edges, or chips.

I think I was getting a little carried away with all the new steels out there, but the 420HC that Buck puts out is GOOD stuff.

Sounds like a stress reliving outing to me ;). I have an acre out back that needs clearing if you have any more of this stress relief testing you need to do!! :D... What!! you didn't take pics!!! :p

Sorry no pics, I went out there on the spare moment. I am sure I will be back out there some time, and I will get some pics.

read cliff stamps article in cutlery science where he compares a 119 with 420hc to a chris reeve green beret with s30v steel. not to spoil the ending but it held its own with the green beret.,,,VWB.

I found something, and it sounds like it stands up very well. I sure do have a soft spot for the 119.

Thanks,
John

The 119 is indeed a handsome, well thought out field knife. I have used them for years and yes, Buck does know what they are doing. The edge geometry is a little on the thin side for serious chopping, but the knife is a true jack-of-all-trades and can function well as such when required. Buck's heat treating makes all the difference in the world. They lift the terminal performance of 420hc to a new level, time after time.
