The 14 and I took a stroll to see what the bunnies are up to, as I might hang some wire this winter. And it struck me that I should practice a little fire starting while out. I used the grass around me and some bark. I popped off some inner bark and scruffed it up and added it to the grass. I had numerous almost starts and finally got her up and doing well twice. If I really wanted a serious fire I would have had more fuel ready. I got the results that I wanted and enjoyed my little romp.

Yes, a favourite of mine. Handle could be a bit longer but then it's a small, light package. I can easily live with the trade off.

You've got snow... And I've got mid-70s. And no, I'm not bragging -- I wish it were cooler. It's near the end of November, for crying out loud. I shouldn't still be wearing shorts, and having to cut the grass.

Nice. Was it you that pulled the bark of that tree or was it some animal?

Beavers girdled the tree and it died. I pulled it off easily with my fingers. Actually I did a short walk to find something fluffy, to get the fire started easier. Nothing was in eyesight so I went for the bark.

Yup, the ground has been frozen here for a few weeks now, or at least a week anyway. Metal detecting season is over for me now, but I can still find many interesting things to do outdoors. The warden is already talking about getting her snow shoes out.

Nice post, always good to get out and practice some skills. I'm jealous of the snow too. Thanks for sharing,

{sigh} tell me about it. I'm down here in Texas and it's been a brutal summer and fall. Seeing the pics from upnorth REALLY make me miss my youth in the Adirondacks. Hiking and canoeing the Racquette River, Tupper and Long lakes, and winter camping near Speculator. Tracking rabbits in the snow. I didn't appreciate it anywheres near enough while I had it.
