took my 15 year old Nephew camping for a quick overnight Just before New years..
he's done some campground camping with the scouts but this was his first back woods trip
the abundance of coyotes we had chattering around us set hin on edge for a bit but thats SOP here.
My buddy Chris came along just so I had another adult, in case something happened to me, It was cold about 25 deg F, but we all had an awesome time

here are some pics

here's the trail as we approach the lake

wouldn;t you know after that it cleared up

Later the wind shifted and it started to spit some freezing rain so it through my poncho over the other side to give a little bit more protection

no knife pics but for all the knife guys out there

the mvp as usual was my Mora carbon companion
also had a GB axe, camillus bk9
Honestly despite the temperature there was so much downed wood we barely used the axe at all.
my nephew had a Mora clipper and a condor bushcraft 5

Awesome pics John, some really nice views at that camp too. I see lots of pics with knives, just no glamour shots. I would think shots of knives in use count just as much bro, at least they do in my book. Good to see you getting your nephew out, that time shouldn't scare him at all, it should make him want more lol.

Thanks guys... Shotgun been working on my bannock for awhile its become a staple in my camp diet, I got a system on how to cook it just right (although you have to check on it every 10 min or so)
I use a zebra billy can as with the inside pan as a dutch oven cooks through in 20 to 40 min depending on the coals
here's a vid for the anyone interested.. the cinnamon is what really makes it shine for me

Great stuff Riley, your nephew is lucky to have such a knowledgeable uncle to show him the ropes !

Great pics and what a great uncle. I take my nephews out occasionally too. One has wealthy parents that take him to Europe, give him fencing lessons, Hawaii, etc. But what he likes best is our camping in the Olympic mountains, building a fire, catching and eating fish and other and assorted backpacking stuff.

Where is this location?

I can't wait until I can get my nephew out with me. I take him for hikes in the woods, but he is still only 6 years old. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Thanks for the kind words gents

Yeah this is one of my 2 usual spots inside harriman state park here in NYS.

I feel lucky to have a cool nephew, who is eager to learn and is a fast learner, I honestly learn as much from teaching him as he does LOL.

maybe he;ll be the cool older cousin to my kids when they are of age.

Thanks.

I have an 18 month old son and these stories keep me excited to take him out when he is old enough. Great story and pics.
