Well, I made a couple posts last week asking for help looking for a high quality, EDC folder. Looking for a high quality EDC folder and Asking if the Chive and HK 14210 were good knives

Yeah, I was looking at a lot of knives trying to decide on what to get. Shown below are some pics of the incredibly high quality, made in China, riveted folder with a 2" blade I bought for an astounding $.99 at the Doolar Store.

Be amazed at the glory:

I found this little POS so useful that I decided to skip the intermediate steps and just go right to some good metal. I did a lot of reading on this site and Google. I thought I had decided on the BM 960, but the looks didn't fully capture my interest. Then I went and looked at a store nearby that had Benchmade knives. They only had a Mini Perdue, but I liked the feel and action of the Axis lock. The salesperson showed me a Chive, and I had to have one.

Here's what I ordered today:

I found I could get both the Chive and the HK 14210 (which I really like the look of) for the same price as I was going to pay for the 960. So, it was a done deal. $138 and change from Thebladeshop.com

I'm excited, lol. But, they are supposed to be my birthday present from my S.O., so I won't get to use them until next month.

I figure now is as good a time as any to ask about a sharpener. I've done my research and ppl love the Sharpmaker. But, I think I'm going to go a step further and just go for the Edge Pro. Good idea or not? I've got a Henkle kitchen knife that I love, and it needs some serious TLC. We also asked for several more Henkle knives for our wedding gifts, so I'll have some more decent knives to care for. I do all the cooking, so I want my knives sharp.

Thanks,

Mike

I own the Chive. Very cool, sheeple-friendly knife. I wear it to church and formal functions, for when I fly (checked luggage, of course), and wore it on our church canoe trip where it saved the day for whittling a few hotdog roasting sticks. Doesn't shock like my BM 710 HS does.

The BM is also a great score! Axis lock, 154 CM, G10 scales, Snody design. You'll be thrilled! Good call on the spearpoint, as I personally don't like sharpening American tanto edges.

If you can afford it, go with the Edge Pro. Seems like a lot of guys here start with the Sharpmaker and graduate to the Edge Pro, I don't see why you can't go the opposite way! The Sharpmaker is limited in edge angles (15 and 20 per side), whereas the Edge Pro is not limited. While a majority here on BFC swear by the Sharpmaker, the minority that swear by the Edge Pro say it is THE sharpener (and use the Sharpmaker primarily for touch-up work).

Unless you plan on buying the $60 diamond stones, the Sharpmaker will not effectively sharpen or reprofile a blunt edge (read in The Toolshed about a guy who spent 5 hours reprofiling a S30V blade). For the extra $60 for the diamond stones you could just as well afford the Edge Pro. I don't have an Edge Pro, love my Sharpmaker FWIW.

Just lookin' at the catalog now and still see a similarity. Mostly the handle though. The blade is a great deal different:D

You will never regret getting the Edge Pro. Be patient and practice with it on your cheap knives to get your technique down before trying to sharpen your new knives with it. Also be aware that it will be difficult to sharpen the recurve of your chive, been there, done that. The stone on the Edge Pro is too wide to effectively sharpen that small of a radius, but for larger, less curvy blades you cannot beat it for edge angle consistancy and reproducibility.

I should be able to sharpen the first half+ of the Chive blade on the Edge Pro, right? And if I get an extra stone and grind it to a half-round profile (or figure a way to mount a rod to the Edge Pro stone mount) I can get into the recurve to sharpen it as well, right?

Thanks,

Mike

You might call Ben at Edge Pro and ask him. I would think that would be the best person to tell you. He seemed to be very willing and helpful when I talked to him when I purchased my Edge Pro.
