I mentioned this in Steve's Admiral Steel thread but just had to say it again.

Yesterday a little before noon I logged onto Tool and Die's website and ordered some steel.

It's now about 2 pm and UPS just dropped it off.

That's about 26 hours from the time I ordered it until I unpacked it (perfectly straight I might add).

Incredible! The carry precision ground O1, A2 and D2 in virtually every size imaginable. These guys are great; life is good.

Thanks for listening,
Dave

yep, I've been buying a *lot* of O1 rounds from them lately for forging...just buy it in the 3 foot sections and avoid the $20 cut fee they charge for the 12 foot sections. Zero shipping and only a $6 handling fee...they're definitely keeping my business for a while...that is unless I get myself set up as a distributor for Latrobe...I've been thinking about doing that...trying to think of things to expand the knifemaking supplies I carry. :)

Yeah Darren, I like your selection of refractory stuff. I'm getting ready to build my long-awaited salt pot - if you were to start selling burners you'd hear from me frequently... ;)

Tool and die sells Precision Marshall tool steels and also handle Timkin/Latrobe steel. Both are at great prices. Timkin/Latrobe also has M2 on this site, but it too expensive for me. I can get S30V from Crucible for 2/3 the price.

Another good site with similar prices is <www.flatground.com> for precision flat ground and drill steel. They also handle Precision Marshall steel and sometimes Bohler/Uddeholm tool steels. Both brands in O1, A2, D2 and S7.

Both have good prices and great service.

I'll second that Dave!!!

They are great people, and have absolutely awesome prices.

Darren, the ONLY thing I've found they can be beat on is round stock O1. I found that round bar from Travers sale flyer was quite a bit cheaper.

I buy the round bar for forging O1, and buy the precision ground stock for stock-removal blades.

In fact, their evertdat prices are so good, that they beat MSC, Travers, etc. SALES flyers (except that round bar).

Definitely a good place to do business with!

Hey Dave, Thanks for the kind comments! :) I'm considering getting into supplying burners as one of the things to add...I've already started selling a few complete forges, but haven't added that category to the website yet.

Are you going with forced air burners for your salt pots?

:)

Hey Nick, thanks for that tip on Travers! I'll have to keep an eye on their sale flyer...I checked the current one they have listed on their website, but they don't have steel on sale this month....maybe next month. :)

Looks like they have excellent prices on W1 drill rod right now as well! 1/2"x36" Watercraft W1 is $3.81 a piece for 3 or more. Timken-Latrobe W1 is $3.71 a piece for 1/2"x36" for 3 or more.

Due to it's low manganese content this is a steel I've been wanting to try, does anyone have any preferences over the two brands?

Hey, I just noticed that shipping is free if your order consists only of Timken-Latrobe products!
