Tool Choices

As it is, I have a fairly well stocked woodshop with whatever that suggests. Tablesaw, Bandsaw, Jigsaw, Scrollsaw, Routers, Planer, Jointer, and Drill press.

In addition I have sleeve and belt sanders, and 2 of the cutest little delta 1" belt grinders :) One has a side mount for possibly a buffer wheel. But definitely nothing setup for real metal work.

When it comes to metal work, I have a vise and hand hacksaw :) Well, I have files and such too. I have an angle grinder, and a jigsaw so when not relying on the hacksaw these are sort of my choices.

I have both a 6" and 8" bench grinder, the 8" is kind of tied up with CBN wheels and dedicated to maintaining my turning tools. The 6" has a wire wheel on one side for, well cleaning things up mostly, and a chipped wheel on the other side that should be replaced immediately if not sooner. perhaps with a buffing wheel.

So I wonder what might be some choices to either improving, augmenting, or adding to these in order to better do some knife work.

Suggestions?

My suggestion would be a dedicated 2X72" belt grinder. The Reeder Grinder is a good unit. That and the drill press will be your main tools. A metal cutting bandsaw is another wise addition. A basic porta-band saw and a home build wooden SWAG table for it will work just fine.

A flat surface for flat sanding handle material, blade tangs and flats, etc. Just like clean joinery in woodworking, these seemingly small details make a world of difference in finished knives. I have a couple of cheaper surface plates, but a scrap piece of granite countertop or anything you can get will work.
