hey guys, where can I get a tool for scribing the cutting edge for grinding?
thanks a lot.

I use a cheap height gauge and a small surface plate for that

I made my own using scraps around the shop, though I think Jantz sells one. That said, a height gauge is the best way to go, given the option.

thanks guys! looks like a surface plate and height gauge are next!!!

quick question, where should I get them?

If you want a low cost alternative, you could buy a single smooth tile or a piece of glass from Lowe's or whatever. I'm not a pro or anything, but it seems to work pretty well for me...

I use a pocket size metal scribe you buy at Lowes. I flat sand one side of the angled point end so when you lay it on a flat surface and slide it along the blade blank it marks a line. You can adjust the height by how much you flat sand it. However if it's close to center I just flip blade blank over and scribe again. I end up with two very close scribe lines that still give you a reference point to follow.

I use an old lathe bit. It's already square so I just grind the bottom corner up .050" for a .110" thick blade. Mark both sides and you're left with .010" in the middle.

I use my height gauge for many operations around the shop. Marking guard centers, even hidden tang handles. I have the cheap grizzly one, and will never be without it. There are lots of ways to skin a cat, but the proper tools are hard to beat

The surface plate method will give you a straight scribe line (i.e. a line that is parallel to the surface plate). If your blade is warped, the line won't follow the center of the stock.

The other method, wherein the scribe runs along the blade, will follow along with any curves in the stock.

What method you use depends on your application and preference.

this setup and what everyone else said.
however I also found that you can do it by just your eye after awhile.
the last 8 or so blades I've ground for testing I did all by eye with no markings, and they came out just fine :-)
