Thats sorta like asking what color should a person paint a car. There are so many different ways to make fixed blades and folders, it really depends on how you plan to make them. You could start as simple as a forge, anvil, hammers, and files. Or you could have a 3hp 2"x 72" belt grinder, a mill, a surface grinder, etc.
If you are just wanting to get started with some of the basics, I would do a little more research first. Consider a drill press, a belt grinder, forge of some sort, a buffer, an anvil, and a few basic hand tools such as a hack saw, hammers, files....
Try buying a few books and read some of the older posts. Don't spend alot of money up front. Start cheap and pace yourself.
