i want to get my son a multi-tool for his birthday. he'll be eight, so i don't want anything overly big or with tools that are difficult to pull out. i doubt he'll need a blasting cap crimper, either :D

i/we had picked out a Gerber, that's when i found out that it HAS TO BE black. what i'm having trouble with is finding something that you can fold out the knife blade without opening the tool up. i know Leatherman does (or did) make something like this. i'm trying to stay around 50ish.

i haven't had one since Gerber made their very first multi tool, so i'm really in the dark about what's out there, now.

any suggestions?

thanx

Check out the Leatherman Freestyle $37 or leatherman freestyle CX $50 shipped off ebay. I believe the difference is the CX blade is 154cm and has a better coating.

Edit: Whoops I just re-read you post. The ones above come with pliers and knife only. Since he's turning 8, I would definately suggest getting him a Vic SAK of some flavor. You can decide on which model according to what tools you would like him to have.

I also second a nice SAK. I think a nice feature heavy one would really be cool. I know I would have enjoyed something like that when I was 8:thumbup::D

If it HAS to be a pliers based multi, steer clear of Gerber. They really have slipped in quality. I know Victorinox makes their Spirit in a black finish for around 60 dollars.

between posting and reading your replies, i had stumbled across the Victorinox Spirit and was kind of leaning that way. i had read a couple of reviews that said the black coating tends to rub off onto your hands, though.

i really liked the way the tools could be accessed w/o opening the pliers.

yea, i'm definately going with a plier based tool. one made by SOG is also in the running.

thanks for the heads up on Gerber. the one i have is great, but it was made a LONG TIME ago :-)

I agree a Swiss Army Knife would be a nice tool for a 7,8 year old.
Nice size blade for that age and you can get the hobby pliers that
many models have plus a vast array of tools ;)

We've had many stories here of "The Right of Passage"
as a father gives his son his first SAK! (wipes lint in eye)

If your set on a plier based MT Leatherman also has the Squirt
series but not as many tools as you can get on many Saks.

The Spirit, if he doesn't lose it as younguns are wont to do, will last him most of his life.

If you do decide to look at SAKs, Felinevet or Rotokid (both at SOSAKonline) can probably get black scales for those that don't come with them.
