hey guys! i have a knife with a 3v blade and a black oxide coating that when i took it apart to give it the spa treatment i noticed orange marks in a circle shape the same as the washers(brass or copper... not sure the material but they are orange). the spots are the same color as the washers and i was wondering if its rust or if the washers would rub off a little on the blade coating and change the color?

anywho.... if it is rust how would i go about cleaning the rust off a blade that has a black oxide coating?
 
You know I found the same thing on my lefty Military I took apart last night. It looked like it had rusted or discolored in a circle the same size as the washer. It didn't feel like rust (the steel was still smooth) so I just put it back together.
 
I would think that the washers would be bronze and being a softer material the friction in that area would remove material from the softer bronze. As the knife is used and with a good lube in the area it will get less in time. IMO
 
some of the bronze from the bushings probubly wore off onto the blade. i dont think id worry about it, just try a drop of oil on the pivot now and then.

im still finding little spots too around the circle, so for safety... how do i clean rust from a coated blade?
i have a stainless cleaner, but i dont know if that would be good to use on 3v?
 
Okay, that schmutz looks like very fine bronze powder. Unless my Google-fu has steered me wrong, Strider uses a DLC coating which is very hard stuff (D.L.C. = Diamond-Like Coating). It doesn't surprise me that the bronze is getting honed down a bit. At my workplace some of our parts get a DLC coat, becoming nearly impossible to scratch with a file. Really hard stuff.

ok well i lubed her up and put it back together.... tuf glide also dries with a bit of an orange rust like color when its not evenly distributed. ill keep checking on it to see whatsup :-P thanks for your help in my moment of crisis lol
