What are the various tool steels that are good for making knives? You guys talk about D2 a lot, and it seems to be a bit controversial, but what are some of the other good ones? The reason I ask is because I dabble in making knives, not that I am any good (I've seen you're guys' work, compared to that, mine looks like garbage) and I would also like to know what to look for in a knife to buy.
Thanks.

Welcome, Internet! You need to boogie on over to the Knife Makers Forum on this site. Lots to read, lots to learn. Grab a beer and some snacks....you've got a long night ahead of you.

I am not just posting this about MAKING knives. I am posting this about what makes a good knife. And what steels to look for, not just to make a knife, but also when I buy a blade. Sorry for not clarifying...

D2 has been a favorite for a long time, no controversy here. A2 is a great tool steel, a fine knife blade steel. These are my two favorites.
