anybody else tried one? I've attached a copy of my post over in the Wilderness/Survival threads, but I thought I'd include it here due to the plethora of people actually willing to test things, so if the mods feel this is uneccessary... it's okay to delete or move it...

Well, aside from the tread in the Blade discussion forum bashing TK mag, some of which I agree with... I do have to say there was one article in the recent edition about Toologic's SL-3 survival tool...

I'll tell ya, that's the best dang $25 piece of survival gear NO Boy Scout should be without! I can't say that Steve Dick actually read the instructions on how to use it, but the rest of the article is an accurate depiction of the unit and it's potential and quality... I know, I have one!

It's got a Swedish sparker on board that works even when wet, and the whistle really works. Don't know about the blade as I haven't used it... and would only in a last ditch situation.. But every time I go out in the field, or even on a road trip, it hangs around my neck weightlessly... waiting...

My only dis on the article was that Steve found "the spine of the blade to be suitable for sparking..." (paraphrased from memory!)
Well, there's a notch on the tang of the blade specifically designed to be used with the sparker... and if done properly, there are two (2) points of contact with the material producing ... yup... TWO sets of sparks instead of one. Steve got his to work fine, so I can only imagine the twin bursts would "double" it's efficiency?

Either way... anyone going hiking or camping should have one of these in their emergency kit - it doubles up on items in the 10 essentials and weighs nothing... yet out performs a lot of packages designed to do the same thing... only in heavier guises or requireing more pieces...

This is one article from TK that is worth the read...
