Tools for profiling?

I'm curious as to what tool(s) you stock removers use to profile a design? I assume that you start with a rectangular piece of stock and trace a pattern onto it. From there, what do you use to cut the pattern out? A bandsaw, angle grinder, hacksaw, dremel or something else?

Also, what steel is your stock when you're doing this?

Mike,I transfer the design of my pattern to the appropriate size piece of stock, with a scribe, and ,unless there is a lot of excess stock to remove,I will grind the profile on a contact wheel belt grinder.Grinding belts,(#977 3-M co.40 grit)seem to last a lot longer, and are cheaper than bandsaw blades. If there will be a large amount of wastage,I will cut the largest portions off with a bandsaw, finish with the grinder. The steel I use could be 440C,ATS-34,BG-42,or D2.Thickness would depend on what type of knife I was making.I like to use thinner stock on hunters,(1/8")in general.

I have some 1/16 mild steel stock and i make the profile out of that and drill all the handle holes and mimic the finished knife. then all I do is scribe a line on the material that i will use for the blade that I am about to make. That way it has all the drilled holes and every thing that i will need, and if I ever want to make another one I still have the profile. Hope this helps
